Shaking Off Like Wet

Behavioral Issues
  • Our Basenji we have had since a pup. He's always had this thing that if we hold him or pet him a lot he will literally shake off after he is down on the ground. He also does this periodically when we walk him for no reason.

What on earth? Do other B's do this or dogs in general?

  • I think dogs do this for various reasons. Depending on context, it can be "whew, glad that's over!" to "well, that was fun, what's next?". At any rate, not unusual, IMO.

We brought Zelda from New Hampshire to Virginia to live; she was sure she was supposed to potty only on ice! :D

@saralars: Yes this is true, I don't know anything for sure. I am just going on the owner's word that this was a pup from one of the puppy mill rescues and that they got her from a foster home. I am pretty sure I will get a 'mind your own business' from them if I ask which rescue they got her from. I will ask tonight though. Do most rescues come with a chip? I could get her to my vet for a scan…but not sure if I will just get owner info. or rescue info. from that. First, I will see if I can get an answer from them about rescue (which one) and then go from there. FAILING to me equals bringing her here for a month and not being able to help her with house breaking and in the process get attached to her and have it all be for nothing if I failed to do it. Thank you for your reply and common sense insight. I am a rescuer, a fixer! Looking at the big picture I don't want to enable them to keep on doing this. I can appreciate your position and the fact that you do not want to enable these people to keep doing something like this again. I guess I just have a different view of what rescue or what a rescuer is. In my view rescue or being a rescuer is about being a facilitator who helps retrieve animals out of situations that are unhealthy, unsafe, or unfit. Then that facilitator makes sure the animals health needs are met and attempts to find safe haven and stable situation for that animal where they will be loved, cared and provided for. I can appreciate you wanting to train this animal by helping to housebreak it but as I said in my other post, I think there are bigger problems here than just Pee. Jason

yeah, it really was… especially with all the drama i have going on with my current living situation it is a relief that something is going right. My boyfriend has been having a heck of a time finding a place to rent that will allow my dogs and me to visit on the weekends. So we finally found a place that would allow it, and then we had to visit to make sure the dogs got along. i was so relieved that not only was Lenny polite, he was playing! yay. anyway, i'm moving out of my apt at the end of November... thankfully my company is going to move me again so I don't have to do it myself! Good thing i haven't really unpacked yet!

Sahara knows what to do, I always say to her, "Go Potty, Be a Good Girl!!! She looks at me like as if to say, "You gotta be kidding, get my sweet paws wet, out of the question"! I use to just let her out the front door and she would got immediately to the grass and pee, now she won't !!!!! It is becoming a tug of war, I will carry her out on the leash and she will try to get to the front of the house, so she can stand on the sidewalk, or pull to get to her doggie door. I didn't have time to take her out this morning, have to get up earlier to do this. I didn't find any wet carpet today so I guess she went outside. The saga continues, these Basenjis are strange creatures!!!!! Thanks for your suggestions, I will try them!!!!!
