Breeder MIA

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • @jeannettemcgarr - would you care to share privately who this breeder is? I find it very, very disturbing that you have not received any response.... that is not the way that a responsible breeder does things.... You can email me privately, email can be found on my website, link below.

  • @jeannettemcgarr

Do a google search and find out what clubs she belongs to. No breeder with a "stellar reputation" would need to mention posts on any forum as a boost to reputation. Furthermore, the posts could be plants... did others agree? Well known "stellar" breeders are known by other breeders. Also " said the litters "... how many litters?

It could be a death in the family, sudden illness, something. But at this point, if you see nothing in her local news, it's time to contact the local breed club. Say you are concerned, wonder if someone knows if there is an issue. Or send to Pat who will pretty instantly know if you've hooked up to a scam or if there could be some legit issue. I just can't imagine it though. It takes about 5 minutes tops to email the litters status and explain if she won't be in contact for a week or so.

  • @debradownsouth - I would not suggest to contact a local club. You can however check at www.basenji.org and see if this person is listed as a breeder (you can search by state) and if so then they are a member of the Basenji Club of America parent breed club. Only members can be listed.

  • Hi Tanza,

I will send you an email soon.

When I say stellar reputation, I mean a significant portion of show dogs are bred with a direct lineage to her kennel. I'm not sure she has actually posted here, but a number of people have discussed her dogs and their experience with her. She was anticipating 3 litters when I last spoke with her in November.

She is a member of the Basenji Club of America.

She has been doing this a long time, and after visiting her, I do believe she is incredibly good at what she does.

I just feel like we fell through the cracks somehow. :(

  • I’ve worked with breeders that aren’t great with communication but this is crazy :(. If she cashed that deposit check that means she has a puppy for you and should be in contact.

Most of the breeders I know personally are in the Midwest.

  • @crazysenji said in Breeder MIA:

Sure you can message me. You deserve to know if there is no puppy for you this year. Keeping you in limbo isn’t right. I’m hoping the breeder is still evaluating puppies and just hasn’t contacted everyone yet.

That seems odd to me, especially after putting down a deposit?

  • She cashed the check in July.

I did speak to someone on here privately. They do know the breeder and said this isn’t typical at all, leading me to believe there might be something personal going on. I hope everything is okay with the breeder. I’m going to step back for awhile unless I hear something else. If she is dealing with personal stuff I don’t want to add to her stress. Just taking a deep breath and praying everything works out for the best.

You are all an incredible group of people. Thank you for taking the time to talk with me about this and trying to provide a little guidance.

  • OK, a breeder may need time to evaluate puppies but surely he/she knows how many orders he/she has (deposits taken shows a commitment to supply a puppy) and once the litter is whelped an email or a quick phone call "Yes the pups are here ! she whelped 17 and I have deposits on 16 of them so although I don't know which will be yours, there is definitely a pup for you !"

    or

"I am so sorry. There was only one pup and we are keeping it. I will refund your deposit at once"

Even if the breeder is facing personal problems - obligations should not be ignored. An' if things are so bad there is no time for a quick phone call, I wonder who is looking after the babes ?

Its OK for you to show tolerance and patience but don't lose sight of the fact you have paid up-front and are entitled to news, positive or negative.

Good luck and may early 2019 bring you a Basenji puppy !

  • I agree with the others that you deserve an answer. Whether there's a puppy for you or not, it impacts your family's life in a big way and you need to know. Did she tell you there would be a puppy for you from one of these litters? With multiple litters, you might not know which litter your puppy will come from until the little one is ready to take home, but I've never heard of no contact for a month after the puppies arrive.

I really hope it works out for you. Keep trying! Are you in touch with any other breeders who might have an extra puppy for you... or know someone who might?

  • @tanza You're right... I "assumed" she knew if with the Basenji club.

Whether the norm for her or not, only a tragedy would explain not responding. Again, it's a few minutes. You may want to start calling other breeders about available pups.

  • I'm tardy, but thank you to everyone who chimed in on this thread. Thanks to Pat, I was able to reach out to someone who knew my breeder and found out there was an unusual circumstance concerning our breeder. I won't go into all of the details, but I will share the happy ending: we did bring home our sweet little Moki in February. She is growing and thriving. She is so smart and sweet and cuddly and our family is completely in love with her. Everywhere we go she makes new friends and she is a little ambassador for the breed.

Without this message board, I think we would have given up and probably would not have gotten our pup. Thank you! 1_1555440982611_Moki.jpg 0_1555440982609_Moki2.jpg

  • Thanks to Pat for helping. <3

Your puppy is utterly darling. OMG what a sweet face. I am glad Moki is home with you.

  • @jeannettemcgarr A real sweetheart, lesson #1 at the Basenji school of learning, determination lol.

  • Obviously very well worth the wait !!!

This is not the time of year to look for a Basenji in the Northern Hemisphere, let alone in Kent ! One breeder from there is reputed to have said he had enough advance orders for 4 years after the last year's rush to buy a Basenji ! But you could (maybe) get on a waiting list for next March delivery. Email me privately (address in websites on signature block) for a list of breed club secretaries.

If you belong to Facebook please join the group "Basenji Puppies/Puppys/Puppy’s: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY". You will learn from the group posts and information why the two breeders mentioned above are not considered "reputable" as well as a whole raft of other breeders considered "disreputable". You will also learn what constitutes a reputable breeder. A non-refundable deposit is a red flag, not being able to locate sire and dame test results on OFA is another, contracts where the breeder does not accept full responsibility of their pups or dogs if something goes wrong or you can no longer take care of him/her. Reputable does not mean they have to be a show breeder but usually they are. Not all puppies are meant for the show ring but their breeder should be breeding to the standard as if they were. As noted by Debra, go to www.basenji.org and search for breeders. Most of the reputable breeders are listed here, but not all. Go to https://basenji.org/index.php/about-basenjis/is-a-basenji-right-for-me, there is a link about screening breeders. These are questions you should ask potential breeders. They should provide you with links the the OFA testing base. DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA are public knowledge. Here is an example of one of my listings on the OFA database.https://www.ofa.org/advanced-search?f=sr&appnum=1415062. For sure Fanconi DNA and PRA DNA must be done, but most responsible breeders also test for hips, thyroid, eyes... however, those results are not always posted a public. But if done, the breeder would have certificates of the testing. Breeders typically show their Basenjis... some do performance events. This activity shows not only the correct conformation (showing) but that and/or performance shows temperament. If you have other questions, please contact me. You can find my email on my website link noted below. And I will comment as Debra said.. many breeder webs are not kept up to date, sad but true...I have always pushed that breeders keep their sites up to date as all "puppy back yard breeders do because people search the internet, but most you can find also on FB.

Definitely go with Tanza's suggestion. Any breeder not listed there probably is not responsible. If you find litters, post here who you are looking at and talk to folks who have their line.
