Rash

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • This rash appeared on my B about a month ago. 1st vet trip they said to give Zyrtec & Benadryl. That seemed to help the agitation but didn't clear the rash up. 2nd vet trip they prescribed Prednisone & Cephalexin which really decreased the redness & he stopped licking at the rash. Now at the end of this round of treatment he is beginning to lick at it again. I have made an appointment for a skin test but thought I might get some insights from the B community. Thanks in advance guys!!!![0_1488243663362_20170227_191733_001.jpg](Uploading 100%)

  • Where is the rash? In the groin area in the creases of the back legs? If so I have had it with 2 of my basenjis. Last time topagen spray cleared it up In a few days. It always seem to happen in winter. My first basenji got it every year in January. I'm not sure if it's the heat on or the dryness. But that spray worked. Good luck!

  • Yeast dermatitis is very common in dogs. Did they do a scrapping of the rash?

@Hana: She is 10.5 months now so we'll be thinking about transitioning at some point to an adult food. Here's a link to many of the dry foods lots of folks on this list use. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/ IMO, if you can afford the 5 star foods, go for it. Kipawa eats Taste of The Wild Bison formula and loves it! There's no grain or corn or 'meal' in it.

@Burma: they said that the vet did do a skin scraping, i dont recall them saying for mites. she eats beneful healthy radiance dry dog food-we thought that could help her skin stuff… You might want to try a better quality food and one without any grains, there are a number of them. And you should check and make sure that she was checked for mites. If you call your Vet they should have it on her records.

If he still wears the same collar and it is the culprit, it will irritate already raw skin and prevent complete healing. I know the holidays are usually tight for everyone, but perhaps finding a (maybe no-so-stylish) collar made of a completely different material and without dyes would stop the cycle. That's what eventually worked for Elvira, my cat. If it is confined to one spot where there an item directly touches the skin on a regular basis, it sounds more like contact dermatitis to me. Any creams may exacerbate the situation. If it was a food allergy, I would expect a more widespread problem. I would suggest, if he wears a cloth or nylon collar, get a natural leather collar with stainless steel loops rather than coated brass. Since colorful nylon and cloth seem to be the rage right now, it may be a little more difficult to find. The payoff is the leather collar will last much longer than cloth or nylon. If it is felt a cream or ointment must be used, break open a Vitamin E capsule and rub the goo on his rash. It is odorless and if Kiya feels she must be Little Miss Nursemaid, the Vitamin E will benefit her as well.

Poor baby. Also from now on, in addition to the benadryl, I'd give the rabies separated out from the combo and skip the Lepto. Check with your vet and do your own homework about the Lepto though. (But no sense in overloading the immune system with a bunch of vac's at one time.)
