How much should my 8week old puppy weigh

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • Hello I am just wondering how much my 8 week old basenji puppy should weigh. I think she is a little small for her age but it could just be her genes. She has a nice size belly and isn't showing ribs but I cant find anything about weight on the internet and thought that maybe some of you could help! Thanks so much!

  • It really varies. I'd look more toward weight gain, if ribs aren't showing, etc. A puppy, unlike an adult, should carry a little weight. Once they hit around 6 to 8 mos, I like to be able to almost see the ribs in the back .. or a waist if you will and tuck up. You should ask the breeder how much the other puppies weigh, and also the size of parents etc so you get an idea what to expect once grown.

That said, I'd expect most 8 week old puppies to be between 6.5 to 8.5 pounds.

  • Thank you so much DebraDownSouth ! We had our first vet appointment this morning and got told she was 'Perfect' from the check up! :) oh and lots of puppy cuddles!

  • Okay so... you know we have to have frequent pictures! :) <hint ... okay so not really much of a hint> :)

  • Lol trying to figure hout how to do that at the moment! I think my photos may be too large :(

  • Hm... if you click that last icon with up arrow, they should load. If not, if you don't know how to resize, let me know and you can send to me and I'll resize and send back to you

Like much internet advice I find short answers incomplete - and mine was. I really want to ad that making a crate/xpen/gated puppy area should never be seen as "punishment". These partitioned puppy areas should be conditioned to be safe places for a puppy/dog. Mine, thankfully, tolerates and even likes her xpens probably because it's where she eats, receives treats, sleeps, chews and even plays. This took about a week or so. Now she voluntarily goes into her xpens (in my case) on her own and when she's put there involuntarily she might whine for a minute before settling down with a chew and/or going to sleep.

@jkent I have certainly never even heard that advice and would not have taken it if I had. It depends on the conditions underfoot, the breed, the size of the puppy (some breeds have very large ones !), off leash or regimented walking, stopping to admire the view / watch the puppy socialise with dogs he/she meets. SO many things to take into consideration. I wouldn't pay much attention to generic advice from the KC. Our breed is 'different' !

@giza1: Heck, I never fed my puppies mush either, just softened kibble. And it didn't seem to take very long before the pups would be sitting in the mom's dog dish chewing on her dry kibble. -Joanne When you think about it… softened kibble is mush.... just all depends on how you offer it. And I only do "mush" between 3 to 4 wks after that it is just softened kibble... and in the end.. that is mush

@Fran… aw :) Yeah, I can't wait to experience being dogpiled by the whole litter :) @Lisa; I don't plan on showing, but I'm sure my pup and I will visit shows often. I like the environment and the certian level of "Crazy" that I get to behold at dog shows, but I don't have the time to finish a dog, so I'd be doing the pup a dishonor by even attempting to get him show-ready. Kyle and Steve have remarked that they're going to make a handler out of me, though... so who knows! lol

Rojer, wth? fipronil and methoprene (the ingredients in FRONTLINE, btw) are to kill fleas, it is not a FOOD for dogs and does not help hair and nourish the bones of the dog.

The more exercise you can give the dog, the better she will be. Walk her at least an hr 2 times a day… A basic obedience class is also required to help her learn her manners. Good luck.
