How much should my 8week old puppy weigh

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • Hello I am just wondering how much my 8 week old basenji puppy should weigh. I think she is a little small for her age but it could just be her genes. She has a nice size belly and isn't showing ribs but I cant find anything about weight on the internet and thought that maybe some of you could help! Thanks so much!

  • It really varies. I'd look more toward weight gain, if ribs aren't showing, etc. A puppy, unlike an adult, should carry a little weight. Once they hit around 6 to 8 mos, I like to be able to almost see the ribs in the back .. or a waist if you will and tuck up. You should ask the breeder how much the other puppies weigh, and also the size of parents etc so you get an idea what to expect once grown.

That said, I'd expect most 8 week old puppies to be between 6.5 to 8.5 pounds.

  • Thank you so much DebraDownSouth ! We had our first vet appointment this morning and got told she was 'Perfect' from the check up! :) oh and lots of puppy cuddles!

  • Okay so... you know we have to have frequent pictures! :) <hint ... okay so not really much of a hint> :)

  • Lol trying to figure hout how to do that at the moment! I think my photos may be too large :(

  • Hm... if you click that last icon with up arrow, they should load. If not, if you don't know how to resize, let me know and you can send to me and I'll resize and send back to you

I know too many puppies and dogs injured or killed due to collars left on unattended. Not worth the risk.

Many, many years ago, I sold puppies to families. I always met them ahead of time, before the pups were born were born, and had a little 'class' in which we went over the beginnings of what to do, and not do, with the puppy.` I remember one family came again, after the pups were born, but not old enough to leave Mom. They had a little boy (just him, no siblings) who did not come the first time (it was for them to approve me, and me to approve them). He was about 6, very smart and well behaved, and went out to the dog room. That was the year I had some oops litters, all born within a week of each other, and he was so excited to just get buried with puppies! I think they were about 6 wks old. I took photos of the whole experience that day, and made a special PRIVATE page of "Ethan's day with the Puppies" We went over my 'getting a basenji puppy' class and he was so attentive. I never got a call from them about any problems - I'm not surprised, he wanted that puppy so much.

One of the reasons that I rotate the food is that then you really do not have to change slowly or at least that is what I find. I change every three months to a different food going between Wellness, California Natural, EVO, Fromms, etc… you get the picture. That way they are used to constant change (also adding in veggies and fruits both raw and steamed along with yams, etc). If I am on the road and need food for the B's then I never have to worry that I will not be able to find what I am feeding them at present... as they are used to change...

The more exercise you can give the dog, the better she will be. Walk her at least an hr 2 times a day… A basic obedience class is also required to help her learn her manners. Good luck.

When I first got Sugar, then Damisi, the neck biting was allowed to be a bit rough until about six, seven months old, the Shadow put them in their place. I've found they generally work it out and if it gets too rough, someone will retaliate, but without really hurting the other.

L'Ox is on the small side. He is only about 16.5 inches at the withers. He may gain a little more height and will probably continue to fill out for next couple of years but he will always be a small male.
