Basenji howling in the crate

Basenji Talk
  • So my 6months old is in heat right now and I've noticed that she howls in the crate but only when I leave the apartment. Shes always been fine in the crate. The crate is always open in the living room and she likes to go in there and sleep during the day. During night, she sleeps fine in the living room and doesn't howl or anything but only does this when I leave my apt. Is this because of her just in heat right now?

  • It is not clear, is she confined in the crate?

  • no, the crate is fairly large….she can easily move around in it.

  • I think she meant as in locked in, not open.

I seriously doubt it is just being in heat and really hope this doesn't develop into a habit so you want to work on giving her interesting toys, exercising so she is TIRED etc.

  • My 4 year old B also goes in a locked crate when I'm gone & the crate is always open when I'm home. He does go inside at times to sleep when I home I know he enjoys his crate. Basenjis can have separation issues, but it's something they learn how to deal with… Your B mite be howling because of being in the crate, but likely because your B doesn't like being alone.
Try giving your B a toy or something that can keep her entertained & only give her that when she goes into the crate when you are gone. Good luck

  • Sounds like she is letting you know where she is - Lela really (I mean REALLY) howls when she does not know where we are.
When we leave our B's alone, we always tell them we are leaving and when we will be back. They understand. We don't use crates.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
