  • Hello everyone I'm a proud 1st time basenji person.
My wife and I have been fostering/ training different breeds for about 2 years now all the while looking for that one dog that has a personality that meshes with ours, everything from pure bred Shepherds and labs to mutts. Then there was Buster
The previous owner turned him in because he was un-trainable, and he was not house broke.
We've had him 4 days now. And he's completely house broken and leash/walk trained.
The 1st day he gave my wife a "hug" or dog equivalen. She knelt down and buster walked up and laid his head on her shoulder and has since all ways while sitting next to her either laid his paw or head in her lap something I have not witnessed in any other breed, to bond and show effect on that quickly.
    Anyway wanted to share that.
I'm sure I will have more questions as time passes. Buster is 8 months and is a rescue.

  • Welcome Dave and Buster, sounds like he is the perfect dog for you!

  • I didn't see this post until now, but welcome to the wacky world of Basenjis!, they are a breed like no other!
Buster was lucky to have found you, and he knows it. And I'm sure you're happy to have found him.
Where did you get Buster from?
    -Joanne

  • Sounds like Buster has found the right home with you and your wife, lucky you and lucky him. I love the hug part of your story, sounds like you have a snuggle bum like our boy.

  • Since Buster is a rescue, I would highly suggest that you have DNA Fanconi testing done. It is a cheek swab that you do yourself. You can order the test at www.offa.org for 65.00. Money well spent for peace of mind and know your Basenji's status. Scroll down till you get to Fanconi DNA

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

Hi Jolanda I forgot I was registered for Basenji Forums until I got your email. I will reply to it privately, but I can tell the others on here that health testing has been done on the parents of my planned litter this year. Both have had hips done, been Fanconi tested and had eyes tested. The stud has also had thyroid done. I hope to get thyroid done on the bitch before breeding season. Christine Senjabi Basenjis

Lakers13 - all this will be very disappointing to you now that you are on the verge of getting your puppy but I hope you'll be taking this very well meaning advice. I don't know this breeder and so wouldn't dream to make comment but of course these other resepctable breeders do and you've heard from others' experienes with dogs affected with Fanconi. I'm sure at this time of year you'll soon be able to find a healthy puppy form a genuine breeder.

@dunappy: Hie all I'm from New Mexico. I currently have two basenji neutered males named George and Ice Man. I lost my female (their mother) this past weekend at the ripe old age of nearly 17. She was born Dec 19th, 1991 and passed away last Friday Oct 12th, 2007. George and Ice Man are both almost 15 having been born Dec 13th, 1993 and both are still healthy and going strong at the moment. however I know here in the next few years I'm going to be without them and I'm starting to look for a young one to bring in. I lost my first basenji female last year after 16 years very hard. I now have 2 a female and a male. Its been fun they are both from the same litter and my son got a male at the sametime.
