Only 1 Basenji but looking to get another

Show Off Your Dog
  • Quercus,

    Thank you!
I was looking at breeder Rugosa Basenji's near Toledo Ohio. Have you heard of her?

  • Yes, we are very good friends. You couldn't get a basenji from a more caring breeder.

  • Chase is a gorgeous boy!!! We too are looking to add a pup to our home. Rocket is a 5yr.old neutered boy and we are looking for a female this time. I hope to find a brindle this time, but they seem to be hard to find here in Texas.

  • It is hard to stop at one. We had our girl for a year then got a boy for companionship. I feel they do best in pairs and even tend to get into less –- a bored Basenji (or any dog) is a bad thing! If you want a puppy NOW, Ann Harrison (Hacker's Basenjis) near Indy had 2 mid season female puppies available a month ago. If she still has them, that would allow the 2 to be a bit closer in development. She a wonder breeder and cares greatly for her dogs. We have had 2 of her's -- great temperaments! Dr. Tracy (Select Basenji's) near Dayton, OH is also planning a litter this year. She also has wonderful dogs. I've also heard good things about Rugosa.

  • if you are looking for someone in Ohio area, I would like to suggest CarolAnn Worsham- Hicotn Basenjis. She is Dayna's breeder. We have bred Dayna last year, she might still have one of her pupies (about a year old now). here is her web site www.hicotn.com.
    Good luck

  • cmd & dana,

Thank you for your replies of breeders. We have put our name on two breeders list and hoping to add our name to a third list. I guess we decided kinda of late and lot of lists we are at the bottom keeping our fingers crossed. I will check out Hicotn Basenjis as well since it is closer to home.

    Thanks Again,

  • dana,

interesting… i can't get to the www.hicotn.com web site. Looks like it has been deactivated.

Try again. It should work. Also Ann's site is http://www.hackersbasenjis.com/

Another fun site to check out is http://www.zandebasenjis.com/

  • We also got started looking a little late, we didn't know we would be adding another B so soon. But we lost our 13yr. old boxer a few weeks ago and the house sure seems lonely with only 1 dog. Rocket seems better now, but he sure is a lonesome boy. My breeder was out of town this week, I will talk to her on Sunday and see what her breeding plans are for this year.

I hope you have let the breeders know that you are talking with other breeders. As a breeder, I know that waiting for the litter is difficult since there are so many unknowns. I only take a limited number of people on my waiting list and refer to other breeders if I do not think I will have enough puppies. It can be very frustrating to find out after the puppies are actually here that a person you had on the waiting list and therefore told others that your waiting list was full is actually not getting a puppy from you since you were their third choice and now that pups are here they know they have one from breeder 1.

  • Yes … I have been upfront....actually the first breeder isn't sure I will get one... 2nd one doesn't know if the the 2nd bitch took... and third one speaking this weekend.

  • i just wanted to add here that i checked the brat website this morning and there are several brindles available. you can see them at www.basenjirescue.org

  • Chase is a most handsome boy. I think he needs a female companion.

    hello again,
I am not sure if you have managed to load hicotn's web page, but I checked and it is working. here is the email she provided on her website cworsham@ctcn.net
    good luck

  • Thanks Dayna,

I did and actually talked with her. Unfortunately she doesn't have anything available at this time. She got me in touch with another breeder which I don't think it is going to work out. So I am pursuing one in North Carolina with hopes this one works out.

  • I believe Susan Campeau in NC is going to have a litter. As well as Tad Brooks in central KY. I can't speak of thier dogs personally, only that they said they may have litters this year.

I still need to plug Ann (Hacker) Harrison who had mid year litter. I can't say enough good things about her. Our Smitty a Hacker he is the sweetest most gentle thing since our first from her line. I'd get another if we didn't already have 3!

Also I have an email from someone who is breeding from Ann's line if you want to PM me.

Sue Kite of Klassic Basenji's said she'd be having a litter. Our Ramsey is from her line. Ramsey is also a very gentle dog and is about to turn 12!

    Quercus,

    Thank you!

We got our Basenji, Bisa [formerly Lucy], from Vicki. You can't go wrong with her and I think she may have had a new litter recently. She will direct you in the way to go! :)

  • Just noticed the dates of the posts … trying to get used to the site again after not being in here for awhile ... Sorry!!!:o

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

You had me confused and then I realized you meant the write up on the other rescue (Okapi)… I like less white also. So I had to go look... wow, coloring reminds me of minpins. :) Cute dog though.

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.
