I have had the pleasure of owning both breeds. There is another forum member here who also has a basenji and a Shiba. Lol, they are both very stubborn breeds. Depending on what you want they are very different though. Shibas need a lot of care for grooming, they blow a lot of coat and can get matted fur, on the other hand they make a very good watch dog. Basenjis don't bark but make a multitude of other noises. Their coat is nice and short for less grooming, though they too blow coat, just not as bad as a Shiba. They both maintain puppy characteristics their whole lives and live long lives. I think our Shiba was 16 when we lost her. Both need a lot of socialization, with both people and dogs. This is a must. Good luck with whatever breed you choose. Look at parents for temperament and do your reading on health problems and make sure you adopt from a reputable breeder.
Hello!

I just got my first basenji 2 months ago. I
ve been reading and learning about the breed for the last 5 years now and just made the big decision! So far so good but having read the stories I
m keeping alert. There are many questions I want to ask and look forward to hear your advice! -
Greetings from another basenji fancier that hasn't yet owned a basenji. Did you get a puppy or an older dog? I have been doing my homework on the breed for just over a year now, and I am trying to decide wether to get a puppy or a young adult. What were your key factors in the decision on this breed?

I got a puppy because I didn`t feel confident in dealing with issues an older dog might have. The main reasons for choosing the breed were compatibility with apartment life (size, cleanliness) and the charming personality!

I have come to a similar conclusion, and I am anticipating bringing home a puppy in March. I was nervous about the idea of transitioning through the puppy stages, but have connected with a nearby breeder that is knowledgable about the local resources and provides support. I now feel more comfortable with going down the puppy trail. Just need to get the house ready for a puppy!

Super… Lisa and I have co-bred litters and I am co-breeder/co-owner on Sophie and her baby boy! Please think about coming and spending so time with us (not sure if Lisa is coming since she just delivered a little baby girl of their own in April) but the Basenji Club of Northern California is having our annual puppy match on June 22nd in Oakley, not that far for you. Information can be found at www.norcalbasenjis.org and then go to events and the premium for directions. A good breeder is family once you get a puppy…. and is there for you during all the ups and downs! We are in the Sac area for shows every now and again and will be in Vallejo June 8th and 9th for shows. Will post the show times if you might be able to come. Carly, from my litter will debut in the ring for the first time... always fun to watch! Glad that you like watch C-Me's litter grow up... they were amazing, I was so happy with all of them as are their new owners!
