This is Scarlet…do you think she is a Basenji mix?

  • HI

My fiance and I just adopted Scarlet…we think she is part basenji so if you experts could look at the pics and let us know what you think, that would be awesome! Some additional info...her tail is not curled but has a white tip, she barks sometimes but also makes funny throaty noises too, and she tiptoes around the house and tries to sneak up on the birds at the feeders like a cat. Thanks for your help!

  • In my opinion Scarlet doesn't have Basenji in her but of course that's only my opinion and from photographs it's not always easy to tell. The colouring and markings are Basenji like. Any way she is rather beautiful. Thank you for giving her a loving home and welcome to the forum!

  • it does rather look like a 'mix' with Basenji. I just love hearing the good works of people opening their homes for the ones that need it! Bravo and good luck with her! cutie-what ever she is!!!

  • She is darling. Are there a lot of basenji byb breeders in your area or in rescue? She has some basenjiness look to her, but I have no idea. If you can video her other noises, we'd love to listen. :)

  • Scarlet is a cutie whatever she is! If you have a real interest in learning what she is, I would recomment wisdompanel.com - there you will find a site that will send you swabs for her cheeks, then will later on send you a report showing everything that is in her, and how much of each - it goes back five generations and the reports are wonderful. I know I sound like a commercial, but we sent off to find out what our Gemma was mixed with, and found she is basenji all the way on one side, and sheltie on the other, with a little collie thrown in three generations back. Because the reports send along information about what the breeds personalities are, it's really easy now to see when Gemma is being sheltie-ish and when she's being basenji, which is mainly when she's interacting with her PB sister. Good luck with Scarlet, and welcome! I think you can also pick up the DNA kits from wisdompanel at PetSmart, or so someone told me.

@elbrant - Better place to see what a Basenji looks like is on the BCOA site, www.basenji.org and go to https://basenji.org/index.php/shop/books-cd-s-illustrated-standard/illustrated-standard. You can review on line

@allyn said in Basenji mix?: Meanwhile I know that like a Basenji, he should never be off leash, and we always need to make sure the gate is securely shut, I have had Basenjis for a long, long time now. I have always let them run off lead in the woods away from traffic. They have all been taught - and I have had up to eight at a time although am now down to one, soon to be two (!) - to return to me if I whistle. Basenjis CAN be taught to run free and to obey commands. Yes, gates should be kept shut, tightly, at all times. But away from traffic, they can be trained to behave and allowed to run free. I have bought a puppy sling for my new boy so I can take him to the woods with Hoover, and let him meet lots of people and thoroughly socialise until he has had his shots. I don't intend to deprive Hoover of her freedom just because of the puppy. He will learn to walk on a leash but mostly he'll be the hunter nature intended him to be.

Hi there. I would do some DNA testing on him. However, if you go to the Colorado Basenji Rescue website, there is a mix at the bottom of the page. There appears to be some similarities. You could also email Peggy of CBR with your photos and ask her. She has been working with Basenji and Basenji mixes for a long, long time.

@Gigi said in Newbie, I think I have a Basenji Mix?: @eeeefarm She only barks if she actually sees or hears something - and it will be more than one bark, but she is by no means yappy - could be the collie in her :) Then again, when I tell Bailey to get the" red" or "green" ball, is she seeing the same "red" or "green" that I'm seeing, or is it just by word association, who knows? She always gets it right. I agree talking to our dog keeps them engaged with us. Here's a bit of news for you.. we don't see the same red and green as other humans. Not just those with various types of color blindness, but in general. Take one of those color vision tests with someone and you'll see when you rank things, or decide if blue or green, or if you can see the numbers in the pics. Neitz confirmed that dogs actually do see color, but many fewer colors than normal humans do. Instead of seeing the rainbow as violet, blue, blue-green, green, yellow, orange and red, dogs would see it as dark blue, light blue, gray, light yellow, darker yellow (sort of brown), and very dark gray.Oct 20, 2008 Psychology Today"
