Licking back feet question

Basenji Talk
  • Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and it looks to be a great place for basenji lovers. I have a four year old male who has recently started to lick his back feet. At first I wondered about allergies, but he rarely licks the his front feet. His back feet are a different story. He has licked them to the point where they are scabbing over. He is crated during the day, so I do my best to keep him exercised. I wonder if this licking is from boredom?

Anyone else experience this? I doubt it is a nervous condition since he seems to be very happy and relaxed.

    thanks,

    Craig

  • My father's red and white used to lick and chew his feet…the Vet said he had fungus and they had to treat his feet all the time.

That doesn't mean your dog has it...but I remembered Simeon and his feet problems when I read your post.

  • A quick vet check may be a good idea… if anything, it'll reassure you it's not a health issue or allergy.

Do you provide something like a stuffed kong for him to lick at while he's crated? Stuffed FROZEN kong toys work wonders for crated dogs. the toy can be stuffed with tons of things (i.e. peanut butter, cream cheese, kibble, wet dog food, chicken, tuna, even jam a few dog biscuits in it...) it would give him something to focus on besides his back feet.

Another way to help (if it is an anxiety/nervous behavior) is Rescue Remedy (or another Bach remedy). these are natural extracts, that work over TIME to help ease anxieties.

Mine are naked in the house, but they are older and not inclined to leave, even if a gate is left open. We wear Nick Russell Safety-choke, similar in theory to martingale in that it snugs up when the dog pulls. We walk in harnesses, it is safer for their old necks and spines.

The only reasons I would not crate little bs with big bs is (1) I don't want any fighting so you would have to play that one by ear (2) If the little one potties in the crate accidentally the big b has to suffer too. But I only have 1 so thats all I could think of

I was surprised by how thick the whiskers were! She was finally a bit sleepy and left the scissors (I tried a small nail scissors this time) so I got the annoying one trimmed, but I was surprised at how the scissors barely got through it! Oh well, its dumb but at least now there isn't this annoying long hair hanging way down off her chin :)

@Jylly18: THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home :) I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess! HaHaHa! That conjures up a picture!

Shadow also used to 'pick' at his food. He started expanding so I cut back the food at each feeding and now he is eating normally and finishes his bowl when the others do.
