Everyone needs to talk about a spay/neuter... while in Europe it is not the "norm" to do so... however in the US it is.... that said waiting till the pup is mature is the best... but in the US we have issues with puppymills and Backyard breeders that breed/sell pups for profit... My contracts say that the pup needs to be spayed/neutered... and we talk about the age. Again, I will say that my puppy people are "Vetted" before getting a puppy, but many Puppymiller puppies and/or Backyard Breeders could not care if those pups were bred or not... nor are they health tested... so as they say "buyer beware". Responsible breeders stay in touch with the pups they place... the others... NOT... could not care less... OK I said my 2cents... And many in the US are not ready to keep a female that is in season... a short story about a friend that had 2 German Shepards... Male/Female in tact.... female came in season, so they locked to male in the backyard, female in their garage... the male "ate down the door to the garage to get to the female..".... puppies happened... no health testing either... IT HAPPENS... DO NOT THINK THAT IT WILL NOT! And I can tell you stories about males coming through windows in the home to get to a bitch in season....years ago we had a 12yr in-tact male lab 3 blocks over, he knew exactly when my Basenji bitches were in season... thankfully we had 12ft fences... but he was there every single day... not so for many homes that have fences this big... and if this boy was younger... I can bet he would have found a way over the fence
How does you B let you know it's Play Time?

Just curious, how does your B let you know it's time to play?
If I am sitting down, it's easy. Jazz just keeps running to me and jumping down into that dog-play stance.
If I am walking down the hall, it's another story: she runs behind me and bites my calves {not hard}; LOL When I turn around she runs away and then bounces down into her "come and get me" stance. Doesn't hurt as she's just kind of lightly grabbing and releasing very quickly, but it always startles me!
When I hear her tags coming up behind me – as I always do as she is like a shadow -- I have to get ready, just in case!:D -
Duke wants me to drop everything soon as I walk in the door . . . he jumps on my thighs to greet. Then just when I reach to pet him, he will turn and run away like wanting to be chased in a B-500. Another dead giveaway is when he runs past me with a chewy or toy in his mouth looking like he's thinking, "Bet you want this - Ha Ha Ha!!!" He teases me!

When I sit down to watch the evening news Abbey makes her move. She brings her green bunny and drops it at my feet. I have to wrestle it away from her, throw it, and yell Bunny! She chases it down, brings it back and we do it all over again. We recently accidentally invented a game she thinks is hysterical called Banana's Gonna Get You. She thought she wanted a bite of my banana till she realized it smelled funny so she started backing up and shaking her head. I said, Watch out, silly, this banana's gonna get you. She started her B500 dash and bouncing off all the furniture. Every time she slowed up I'd say it again and she'd start all over again. It has now become a daily favorite.I promise you I'm normal in every other way. You have to get creative to keep basenjis amused.

Sahara will get in her play stance, down on her front legs with that cute little butt in the air. We play, "I'm going to get you, and she will take off in that B
-500 run, she will end up on the den couch, under a pillow and when I go to her, she takes off again, it is so funny, she runs down our hall which is hardwood, and she slides into the wall at the end, turns around, runs back up the hall, around the living room coffeetable, into the den, in the recliner, around the kitchen table, up on the den couch and we do it all again. She runs until I give out or her tongue is hanging out. It is real funny when she will stop in the kitchen for water right in the middle of her run. My hubby and I have laughed at her until our sides hurt, she has brought sooooooo many funny days. B's are a handful, but I gotta say they are the best.:o -
