My Clown Dog Hollie

Show Off Your Dog
  • I adopted my Basenji/Whippet mix in December 2005 from a local shelter. The shelter had her listed as a Whippet mix and I am surprised they didn't know she was part Basenji. She not only resembles one, her personality is ALL basenji. She can always make laugh and keeps me on my toes. She is the joy of mine and her daddy's life! I hope the picture comes through as an attachment. It took me FOREVER to get it resized and I'm still not sure the picture will show up.

  • she's adorable! and very pretty coloring

  • she looks cute! and yes, what a nice color she has. she must be very fast, I mean being a mix of whippet and basenji. I love her ears too.

  • Thanks! Hollie is a handfull and LOVES to run. We take her to the dogpark as often as possible. She likes being the leader in a game of "chase." Her ears do stand up sometimes, but mostly they flop over sideways (seems to have the whippet ears). I feel very fortunate to have Hollie, as she was a shelter adoptee. The shelter is having a reunion on Sept. 30th and I can't wait for them to see her and let them know she is part basenji. Apparently she wasn't at the shelter long enough for them to get to know her ALL basenji personality. We love her!!

  • Yep - Hollie has that strong Basenji front end. Her chest is undeniably Basenji as well as her face. On the chair she doesn't look too big either. I think Whippets are bigger than Basenji. I should try and post a couple of Dukes pics too - but like you, I need time to fumble with it all. She's beautiful - thanks for sharing.

I was living in Ghana for a few years and the year before I left had gotten my dog as a puppy from a neighbor. We became so attached, of course, that I couldn't leave him behind. It actually was very easy to bring a dog into the country–only a proof of rabies vaccination was required (surprising since the US has the strictest immigration laws for people!). He has adjusted very well, loves taking walks with a leash (in ghana he would run wild, and follow me around on my bicycle.) He refuses to walk in wet grass, though, which is something I think he shares with basenjis? I didn't post any pictures of how his forehead wrinkles--that's when he looks most like a basenji!

We are J J and Karin, Kansas City, Mo. Both of our kids are rescues, Itty Bitty Basenji now 5 years old, originally from Craigs List and Mr Baroo, now about 2 years old, a BRAT adoption. We have no idea where they came from or exactly how old they actually are. Bitty is the more delicate little girl with the white face, Baroo is the more muscular boy with the totally red head. That last picture is priceless, made me laugh out loud. Great that they enjoy playing in the water.

[image: p4120033dw6.th.jpg] an even cuter picture! Although her mouth is all cheesed, I think we were playing in that pic.

Nexa is full af. and she is very cautious in new situations. She is curious and wants to say hi to every dog or person we see, but if they approach her she will back away. The introductions have to go at her pace. We were on a walk the other day and she was desperate to investigate a cat laying in someone’s driveway. She just stood there staring at the cat from 5-6 feet away, as soon the cat came towards her she tucked her tail and ran like it was a lion after her. The cat might have weighed 8 pounds wet. She is wary, but with her curiosity she just can’t let things go.
