January Updates

Show Off Your Dog
  • January is a slow time of year in the midwest, as normally we are in the midst of ice and snow. This year has been the exception with many days getting up into the mid 60s. I am not complaining. We managed to take the basenjis down to McKinney Texas mid month for the girls first attempt at Lure Coursing. They both took to it quite well, with Tempest earning both her majors. The next weekend I showed Gambit and Whippet Annie at a small show close to home. Gambit took BOS for another GCH point and Annie went WB/BOW for another single. February is also a slow month with only the Indianapolis shows and one day of racing, weather willing. Enjoying the time at home training the girls for the summer rally trials, they both enjoy it a lot, especially the cheese treats for doing well.

  • Sounds like a great start to a new year!

  • Sounds as though you had a successful January. I hope it augurs well for the year.

  • Congrats! The weather has been so up and down this winter in the Midwest. Good luck at Indy.

I've already replaced one set of bedsheets due to the digging. I swear he does it as soon as I leave the room, I'll hear him start digging, then he gets demoted to the couch (I guess this isn't really punishment…).

Thanks everyone! We couldn't be happier, he is everything we could have asked for! Still training for the therapy route, but we certainly won't force it on him if he isn't enjoying it. He wants a sister…I mean WE want him to have a sister :)... but we're probably going to hold off another couple years before doing so! Especially since we may possibly be moving in the next year or so.

@luzmery928: Wow that collar sounds great. Please let me know where you got it. Our problem is that our boy Champ tries to dominate our girl and though we have been able to work with hom some, he still tries and if someone else is around they get bit too. For exaple this weekend my sister came over and Champ has this thing of biting Belle when ppl come like if he dosne't want her to get attention but my sister's hand got caught in the middle and unfortunantly got bit. So though it's not direct aggression towards us I think this collar would work great. I got it from the trainer, Sherry Moore from Ohio…Her and her husband buy normal shock collars and transform them into a virbrating collar. Im sure if you googled it youd find vibrating training dog collars. (Mine was free bc she is a friend of the family and they make them themselves) but I know she doesnt sell them unless your being trained under her. Ill do some research and see if i cant find some online tho!!

@Mantis: How old is she? Tell us more about her. She is so cute! When we got her (late Oct 2006) the vet thought she was 9-12 mos based on teeth. Over the months she has been getting more spots on her belly. Dont know if that gives any sign of age or not. She seems smaller than some of the Basenjis on this site. She is very thin and muscular. Is there a difference between sizes Male vs females? Could she have been a runt?
