• We have a 9 year old male Basenji Ty, who will stop to urinate and then when you think he has finished, he will resume walking but keep on urinating. It is like he can't shut it off for about 20 feet or so. He will do this several times at the beginning of his walk. Any ideas?

  • Is this a new behavior? If so, at his age I would get a vet to have a look at him. If it's a habit he's had for years, perhaps he's just more interested in walking than peeing. 🙂 My guy will sometimes…...not often.....start to move off before he's through. Or change his mind about the "right spot". But more often with defecation than urination.

  • Our Dude has always been a wandering pee-er. When the grass is too wet and he goes on the patio he leaves a trail all the way across.

This behavior began this past year. It is almost like an older man with a prostate problem. It creats a larger issue when he comes back in the house through the doggie door and leaves a trail along the floor.

  • Maybe take him to the vet and see what they say. I know my female Shiba Inu had 'leaking' problems when she got older and it was caused from kidney problems. They had to change her diet to less protien and start her on some pills. It would be something to look into anyways.

  • I would have the vet check him. At nine, other issues are indeed possible. However, because he shows no incontinence at OTHER times, I suspect he just is one of the walk-n-pee-ers. You may have to retrain him with treats, stand in one place, and sadly block the doggie door and go out with him til he is done.

  • Do let us know what you find out from the vet please.

  • Dogs can get prostate problems so I would definitely take him to the vet! It can also happen to neutered dogs depending on at what age they were neutered.
