Recommendations for collar, leash?

Basenji Talk

  • I just bought one Saturday from this site. Many designs, sizes and collars are lined.

  • I always buy Lupine because Malu has a tendency to like to chew on his leads and collars. They replace everything for free even if chewed. If you find a local store that sells them you can just walk in and exchange. They're clip is more like a Carabiner so its much easier to operate and it doesn't get jammed up with sand and dirt.

They are good collars and I have gotten a leash replacement but the nylon irritates Buddy's neck. Right now he's wearing a hemp collar which seems to be better. I just ordered a collar from 2 Hounds that's lined with cuddle satin.

Which design did you choose on the new collar?

  • The Hot Rod. Shown is the 1-1/2 and 2" with the border. I got the 1" wide which does not have the borders.

I really liked this one too but thought I would buy one and see how it goes.

  • Great looking collar, Dan!

I had Malu in an "earth dog" hemp martingale. One day I removed the collar I accidentally left it within his reach. Turns out that he must like hemp because he ate eveything but the D rings. Usually he'll just chew on/tear up things but with the Hemp he actually ingested it. Luckily, it worked its way out.

  • The Lupine harness is sturdy and works really well but when they are new, there have sharp edges (from where the threads are sewn), which irritates the skin. So I just used a nail file to smooth the sharp edges/corners.

I use a harness with a lead but Cosmo also has a soft martingale collar with a phone number stitched on it. :)

  • Oh, oh, oh! I have to recommend Collarmania (http://www.collarmania.com). Going to order some for the pups when the youngest get older. :) I've had a few collars from them before, and loved them!

These are nice collars! Thanks for the link.

  • I bought a collar similar to what Nobarkus pictured –- however, I found the buckles were too heavy for my little girl. They dragged the collar down (yes it was fitted correctly) and when clipped to a leash they caused the collar to twist because of the weight. Pretty though.

  • Question…..Why do 'hounds' have the nice hound collar? You know which one I am talking about? The one that is thicker around the front of the neck and then thinner around the back? What is the benefit and why only for hounds...?

Don't turn your head - he wants to smoke that collar. :)

  • I just bought Buddy a solid red hemp collar in March. One washing and it turned pink. So I emailed a pic to Earth Dog. They responded quite quickly and said their newer collars have a better dye and will be sending me a free replacement.

  • We use beautiful martingales from the dutch site www.halsbanden.com - maybe she ships to the US….
The leash we use is what is called in Holland a police leash, with fasteners on both sides:

When I want my 2 B's close, I can use one leash.

Alex, what is the material? Those look cotton, not nylon but helps to know which. This person on Etsy has a lot of variety https://www.etsy.com/listing/108893703/paracord-leash this round one looks similar: https://www.etsy.com/listing/167269676/4-strand-round-braid-paracord-leash?ref=related-3 These fleece ones look interesting.. you can totally design your own from colors to snaps! https://www.etsy.com/listing/172328771/custom-order-fleece-braided-design-a?ref=shop_home_feat_1 I had braided cord for my horses, not dogs so no personal experience. Hopefully someone else here does.

We have used 6 ft leather leads with braided ends, which were nice. Also have used nylon leads from regular stores, but they are too slippery for me and the handle/loops weren't that big for hubby's hands. So now we use Lupine leads that I have bought from vet offices or online. The handle/loops are large and padded and we like the clip end. And the feature we have had to use already that we like best: they're guaranteed even if they're chewed! Just send the leash back (don't even need the receipt) and they send you a new one. They try to even send back one in the same pattern if possible. The website also has collars, etc.

This is actually one of our puppies from this year. We aren't going to be showing this one but one of our other puppies. I was only asking the question because I had not seen any marked like this one. Oscar is going to a home as a pet. The sire is "Black Devil of the Congo CLG" and the dam is "Miss Sweetpea of the Congo CLG". The names were not chosen by us so we did not give them "of the Congo"! This puppy has a great disposition, just like his sire.

Is this Nick Russell of MastersPride? If so, we have a leather collar that does not slip down the neck and works well with them pulling. I put it high on the neck and Talker and Savannah will stop. But these collars that you posted the pixs looks really nice. Do you have the website?

thanks for the ideas. I think the martingales are great training tools, but not suitable for everyday use (at least not for me). I may try the rolled leather if I can't find any wide/flat collars.
