Help…Zoe is having allergic reaction...

  • Hello. I need some help. My basenji, Zoe, is covered in red whelts and her belly is all red splotches. The whelts r little knots like mosquito bites, but not itchy. They keep multiplying….I have had her to the vet three times. Steroids, epi, and benadryl and it is still there. Has anyone else had this?? They are saying insect bite or pollen or.......?? Thx for any help. My baby is just pitiful and it's so frustrating that I can't help her....

  • I am no expert, but this sounds a lot like so,something Ayo had last year . It turned out to be dog lice, veery hard to see, was misdiagnosed first as an allergic reaction. I noticed there was a little red dot on the bites and then I took one and it moved!!!!. very uncommon in the states, but veery common here. .. Just something to consider.

  • Can you take a picture? That may help spur some ideas.

  • Or do you have red ants?

  • One of my friends borzoi puppies got chiggers this yr, but that would cause itching too.

  • Thx all. I will post a pic. I thought it might be red ants. We do have some on our fence. I am walking her by leash in the front yd now…... I am considering a big bubble after this!

  • Poor baby, sounds like you have all the meds covered, I'm surprised she isn't better with steroids and benedryl. Hope she is better soon, how long has this been going on? Might be time to see a new vet, just for "new eyes" and a different perspective. Most docs (human) decide what it is, then try all different treatments, when they may have mis-diagnosed all along.
    Good luck!

  • Kell gets red tummy periodically and so does Rogue, Benedryl would not touch it, neither would cortizon, so I think someone here suggested Funky dog, which I ordered online and now I keep it on hand, takes about 2 days for redness to go away until the next time which may be weeks or months down the road. I just ordered my 2nd container of it to have here. I also ordered their organic bath bar and spray for fleas. So far so good.

  • It could be a reaction to grass or pollen, but if so, using benedryl and wiping her off EVERY time she is outside should help.

I had never heard of funky dog! Tried to look it up but couldn't as that seems to be company, not product. Give me a link please!

  • Here is the website, when you get there just enter funky dog on the search line.

I have never had a vet not know what breed my dogs are, even though when I got my first one they did not have any others in the practice. My vet immediately began reading up. And when I gave her info, she listened. Foxtails can be very nasty and a vet that lives in an area with them should know you have to REMOVE IT before your dog will get better. So I join the others in begging you to get another vet.

@khanis: I have NEVER heard of these legendary fleas or mosquitos…. and I am a Portland native... and have NEVER had a flea issue with my basenjis [Whippet, IG, RR, Newfs, or cats]. Our home ranges from 3-6 basenjis on average and still no problem, even with dogs that come/go for showing or boarding. The only time I have treated them [my dogs] was prior to traveling to the midwest or east coasts. During the time I lived in Portland, which is at the very northern end of the Valley and has more wind than the lower Valley, I noticed a lot fewer fleas and 'skeeters. I can understand why you haven't experienced them. Try camping on the shores of Fern Ridge sometime. Make sure you take lots of DEET. I grew up there and, man, the 'skeeters are horrible! I can remember our dogs and cats had a rough time of it, too. We were always picking fleas off them. But that's the difference between living in the city and living in the back woods. The conditions in the lower Valley are perfect for the growth of fleas and mosquitos: standing water everywhere and very few hard freezes. (Gramma lives in the "sticks" too and has lots of both in her area outside Salem.) But, again, back to the subject, she used Brewer's Yeast and had pretty good results with it.

@Janneke: Yeah, last week we also thought it was a bite.. but it's pretty weird that it happens twice during training.. and nowhere else. Actually, it sounds to me like there is either a bug or plant or something at where you train that he is allergic to. The fact that the reaction happens very specifically when you go to one location would tend to support that there is something at that location that he is allergic to.

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)

On any older dog, cataracts are very common… It would be very hard for a Ophth. Vet to mix up PRA with cataracts. Did you take your Basenji to a board certified eye vet?
