    I started a thread many months ago but decided to start a new thread. I hope that's not a problem. I just saw an ad in a dog magazine for SPF spray for dogs. It's called Epi-Pet. Has anyone used this or any other sunscreen for their basenjis? Or, can I use a little of my SPF45 lotion on Kipawa's nose and/or ears? I have noticed a little bit of pink on Kipawa's nose after a long walk in the sun (we are finally getting some).

    Are there any ingredients in any dog or human SPF to avoid?

    Fran, I have never had a problem with our b's and sunburn. Don't know if anyone else has.

    I've never hasd a problem with sunbrn either. I'm very careful not to use any unnecessary products on my Basenjis particularly if they're not natural and would research Epi-pet carefully. Does their advert contain a list of ingredients? If you are worried about Kipawa in the sun why not use a natural product like Alo Vera?

    I've looked after a couple of American Hairless Terri?rs for a couple of months, and I used sunscreen for baby's on them in summer.

    Any product made for babies will work on your B's. Aloe gel is fine if they do get pinked up out there. We keep an aloe plant growing in our yard (of course that's probably not possible in Canada) and break a shoot off, slice it, and put the aloe directly on us when we get it. So far though, even at the Florida beaches, our girls have not shown any sign of sunburn. (Fingers crossed)

    I have used frontline and advantage for over 20 yrs without issue, but I do the spray on frontline, not the top spot. I have had maybe 10 fleas in 6 yrs at most so I rarely use anything most years. See a flea? I hit them with frontline. It has been 4 yrs but I just found a flea so I ordered a new bottle on line from amazon. I know many give monthly pills but I hate giving my dog internal meds for external issues. (Except capstar, which I do use if I pick up a rescue with fleas and give it an hour or 2 to do it's job before taking it into my house!) As for natural, people swear by them, but study after study after study finds they do very little. Fleas carry disease. Some of the store brands are worthless, others report major issues. If they only got them at kennel, then you might luck out with one treatment but probably you need one now, one in a month, one in 2 mos and that should clear it. Cedar is toxic and no longer recommended at all (though some put in center of bedding, cover with other material, which is probably safe). Frontline and Advantage are safe for older dogs, and they have proven low rates of any issues if used right.     Yikes about Bitty! Interesting that it happens more with age – I feel like I only started noticing them last year. It's all part of her dermal profile. She had really crusty ear rims when she first came to us, and I don't know why... I actually thought that's just how her ears were, like dry skin. After a while, I found that I could gently flake away that crusty stuff, revealing perfectly clean and furry ear tips underneath the scabby layer. Later she got a scrape on one ear and that left some scarring which has remained quite dark and dirty-looking, though I do wash her ears out with Nolvasan Otic. Maybe I need to look at other cleaners. She does also have a larger marble-sized cyst on her back which the vet has examined before, but that seems unrelated to the blackheads and whiteheads. As long as her lumps don't get any bigger or become painful, I leave them be. She eats a very healthy diet of grain-free kibble and raw. Her coat is super soft, which is why it's all the more noticeable when I find those bumps. Bowpi is embarrassed that I've publicized her imperfections for the whole forum to see. ;)

    I no longer use the spot-on products - the last time it "burned" off the hair where it was applied. Fleas are not as big a problem up here in the north unless Gossy catches a flea-infested rabbit or chipmunk or is exposed to feral cats (as at some friends) (in which case I give her a vinegar bath right away) .

    That's awesome…I'm glad the pupper is okay. I have to renew my Pet First Aid Certification. It only lasts a couple years...and then you have to retake the class. I guess that's something I'm going to have to look around Denver-area for.
