  • Hi. I'm considering a Basenji and thought I'd join up and learn what it's like to be owned by one. Right now I have a Dalmatian, a Red Heeler, a Chihuahua and a Toy Fox Terrier. I doubt I'd add a new dog until my almost 10 year old Dalmatian has passed away. I know I'll have to spend the first year concentrating on a new pup and I don't want to take the time away from my boy or the little ones. I've known about Basenjis since I was a kid and saw Goodbye, My Lady but I've never known any.

I've trained dogs professionally (obedience, behavior and personal protection) but am lax with mine which has come home to bite me in the butt at times. I'll start the next pup off right and be more consistent (I'm such a push over). Even though I'm not ready to bring one home, I'm looking for the right kennel that breeds with health in mind.

I ride a recumbent bike ( hence the name rbent rdr ) and Raleigh runs alongside when the weather allows. He has a very high prey drive and I'm constantly on the lookout for squirrels so I can prepare myself for a possible dash. I like it when we see one at the top of a hill because I get a free ride. I sometimes take the Red Heeler out with us. As he's gotten older, I've thought about getting a hook-on stroller in case he gets tired. I plan on starting a Weebly webpage on bicycling with your dog in the future. That is, I plan to start it in the future - I don't mean bicycling with your dog in the year 2052.

Anyway, I look forward to all the stories about your Basenjis so I can get a real feel for them.

  • Hi Leslie

Sorry I didn't spot this sooner. For some reason it didn't show up in "new posts". I bike my Basenji on occasion, but can't imagine doing it on a recumbent bike! Of course, I haven't ridden one, but the visual looks scary to me. I hope you are enjoying the forum. There is a lot of information here to browse through. If you have specific questions, I am sure someone will be able to answer them. Do be aware that Basenjis are a bit "different" and quite a challenge for obedience work, although it certainly has been done! :) (they know what you want, they just don't know if they want to do it for you. Think "cat" and you will have it right)

  • I check every day and it is just today that your post shows. Welcome to the forum!

@Scampy: Hello, everyone! I am so excited to have stumbled upon this forum! I belonged to Basenji Companions until last year, and I miss the community and advice. I have one basenji, a 10-year-old red & white male named Toby. I adopted him six years ago as a "golden opportunity" dog when his show/breeding days were over. He shares the house with three humans and a cat. (We may be inheriting another cat, but don't tell him…I'd sort of promised him a little sister.) Any other west Michigan folk out there? I was born in Kalamazoo! Welcome to the forum! Tabatha
