Advice on moving with basenji

Basenji Talk
  • Moving with basenji, and have a several different questions..regarding what to expect.

First off, the trip is only a three hour drive…we did a couple dry runs back and forth and that seemed to go pretty well - albeit he was tired. But, I'm moving into a 1st temporary place first (for about a week) before attempting to find another 2nd place to move into - a place which may have strange dogs, while this first place won't.

    My questions:

1.) What are some "warning signs" of poor adaptation/stress in dogs who have moved? the dog and I have been to hotels several times and he always acts pretty non nonchalant about the whole travel process. But, these have always been short term stays...what do I need to look for long term? If anything. Can dogs seem to be ok but then weeks later start to develop issues or is it something you can figure out from the get go?

2.) I'm debating whether it would be better to leave him out of the first 'temporary home' situation...have him stay with my parents until I'm fully settled into 2nd place. He'd only be left home alone for about two hours a day right off the bat if he did come with me to the 1st place. The thing is: he will have more exercise with me, and will be put into the expected routine right away. However, is it better to have a grace period where he's not left alone at all for the first couple days or so?

3.) Can dogs develop 'issues' over time from constantly traveling, or do they eventually get used to the process? He's about two years old right now.

Pretty thick stuff. Please feel free to add links if these questions have been answered elsewhere on the boards.

    thanks,

    K

When my daughter was pregnant she would stop by once a week and Izzy would always sniff her all over , most of all her stomach and around that area, her husband was afraid of Izzy being around the baby when he came , because Izzy is not a real friendly basenji especially to my son in law. Izzy has never had any aggression toward my grandson, my grandson is 7 now and Izzy is always there to protect him, when the grandson goes down the stairs Izzy is just one step in front of him like he is protecting him from falling. I don't know about other basenjis but Izzy loves kids, but not a lot of adults.

@EMurata said in Advice for potential basenji owner: The "weather permitting" part of your statement wont work with a Basenji. My dog doesnt care if its 100 degrees out or 10, she needs constant exercise. If outside exercise isn't available for whatever reason, mental exercise is a good substitute. Basenjis are very clever and if you keep their minds busy it often serves to minimize or avoid destructive behaviour. You are not going to wear a fit Basenji out by walking him or her a couple of hours a day, but I have seen them perfectly content to kick back and relax after half an hour of demanding mental exercise! Clicker training can be useful here.....

I think a good cartel saying DONT OPEN is nice, Laika was left on the airport by me one night, so the people there get out of her cage.. i think they got a bad time catching her because first they said to me the next morning laika was missing, then they say that they got her. pff I left her because when Maca arrives i was there waiting for a delay flight almost from 5 pm to 2 am and i was told they were open to 10 pm, So i arrive at the airport at 9 just to find the office closed, and the poor Laika inside! so i return next day for her.. She is very nervous and give me some bites when i put out of the cage.. and thats all. Well i deserved for sure.. lol

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol
