Awful coughing in puppy

    Our baby is now 6 mos old, but since we got her at 13 wks she has been sick…giardia, influenza, uti, and supposed kennel cough....she has been on antibiotics, probiotics, cough meds, Benadryl...nothing will stop the cough. The hard thing is that it is worse after she goes to bed and has slept for 3-4 hours..then she hacks/chokes off and on for 4-5 hrs. Once she is awake it settles after about an hour. She goes outside, to training, walks...very little cough if any. All along each vet she see's say her heart and lungs sound clear. Does anyone gave any similar experience. We now have to do X-rays and blood work. I strongly feel this is in her throat......any insight is appreciated...stressed out and devastated first time basenji mom.

    @elbrant That's good to know! We are in Kansas where pollen and allergies are rampant lol, I am wondering more if that's what it is since the build-up isn't increasing very quickly at all. Seems to be worse after we spend a while outside.

    @chewy1 Seeka is bathed regularly due her swimming and rolling in sand at the park daily, besides she sleeps in the bed with us. We put 1 tsp of Optima 365 in her dry food daily. Vet recommended. Takes care of her dandruff.

    If you don't trust the vets you are seeing, please get her to a university vet for a second opinion. Have you talked to any of the other owners of the litter, or is she a rescue? When kennel cough is really bad, it can take months to clear up and the cough go away. She could also have allergies affecting her at night.. where does she sleep? Can you change where she sleeps to see if it's better?

    Yes, she's a wonderful lady. Always very helpful, and quick to reply to any concerns I have. If I thought it was an immediate problem I would have contacted her right away, but it sounds like a common phenomenon. Glad to have community feedback.

    diahrea is a common sign. My guys both received oral dewormer meds as a standard Banfield Vet procedure for their wellness plan. This is not uncommon. Caesar was always leash walked as a puppy and he still got it. Dont let your basenji eat grass or drink water off out of anything but your water bowl. I have found that the vaccines for Giardia have never worked for either of my basenjis. It is typical for my guys. I didnt catch it at first because I thought Caesar's diahrea was from the training treats. You are a great basenji mommy for bringing yours in for testing!
