  • What does the breeder of Dexter say?

  • Thanks Lisa, for the info. I've never heard of the books you mentioned, cute name though :)
Sharron- What specifically do you mean "What does the breeder of Dexter say?" About the name, she didn't say anything at all. They just gave me the AKC application paper, and then I realized that they had given me the wrong one because it had female and white and brindle checked off- neither of which describe Dex lol. So I talked to them, and they said sorry for the mistake and that I could just do it online…

  • Since the breeder is not interested in either putting their kennel name on the pup (you will find with responsible breeders that they have requirements that include their kennel name and either a theme for the litter or maybe some other requirements).

This means you can register him with what ever name you want.

  • You can look up names of other basenjis in Sally Wallis's data base. Always he k to make sure the name I pick has not Already been used

  • Thanks guys!

  • You can't just do it online. The breeder must supply you with the right registration papers. If they fail to do so, you can file a complaint with AKC.

Not going to go back and look where you got the pup cause I don't need the aggravation, nor you my response. Just glad you are here with good folks to guide you.

  • You can register onliine with the breeder supplied numbers, I did it with my whippet 5 yrs ago.

  • Yes, but not when the papers given are for a female of a different color. The breeder would need to give different number for the right dog.

  • @DebraDownSouth:

Yes, but not when the papers given are for a female of a different color. The breeder would need to give different number for the right dog.

Not true, the paperwork part that is for sex and color is filled in by the breeder or new owner on the registration slip. AKC doesn't have any idea what litter number goes with what puppy (sex/color) until they get the competed form back, they only assign the litter registration numbers to correspond with the number of puppies said to be in the litter. So if doing on line, you can mark the correct color and sex.

  • Yes, but don't the number of males/females that the breeder sent in have to match? I guess because I filled mine out and submitted for the new puppy owners, I never did online. But I do know I had to report the litter size and genders. If the breeder messed up and sent in wrong numbers, isn't that a problem?

But I see what you mean, if she only mailed wrong ones, the person with Dexter's papers (hopefully she just messed up those 2) can simply go online and do their paper and it will all even out.

First, I have to say that the breeder should do the responsible thing and get the papers straightened out, not just ignore the problem. Not a very responsible thing to do.

That said, since this is a less then responsible breeder, I would guess that most likely not all the pups would be registered anyway, as BYB could care less about that.

However, if by chance they are all registered, you are correct that the number of pups by sex are part of the litter record, so could be the last to be registered could really have a problem.

Another lesson, check your paperwork before you "pay" for the puppy

  • We have already established that Dexter's "breeder" was disreputable. How many litters did this person have? If she had more than one litter then it is entirely possible that the papers that were supplied with Dexter may not have even been from the litter he was in.

@Buddys: I agree, well said Robyn. A very well rounded reply, and I appreciate your time in explaining the options that are out there. I am not one who advocates adopting ONLY from a shelter or rescue. I love to hear that it happens, but totally respect the choice of wanting a pedigree. I just hope that anyone who breeds for what ever reason does follow responsible guidelines for the prospective new owners, health and welfare of the puppies, dams and sires, and of the wholesomeness(?) of the breed of choice. I do have a waiting list for the future puppies (besides the ones that myself and the co breeder are keeping.) I also have a contract that states for any reason the puppies are welcome back at any time for any reason and i highly urge this to my potential owners (i say required but we all know that people fall through loops when you say required) anyways All of my dogs are health tested and the sire is health tested too. Fanconi, eyes, thyroid, and the hips I am waiting for results but she isnt in heat yet so i hope i will get it before they are bred. Trust me, I also know how rescues are. I have rescued (www.foreverfriendsrescue.webs.com) since 2008 when i rescued my first dog scheduled to be put down that day i went into the pound, and i never really stopped) so i know the effects that bad breeders can have on the dog population. Which is why we need to have more responsible breeders out there. Ones who do the health testing, ones who care where there puppies go, ones who want to help the breed, ones who give a $h!t. I love this breed. They are my world and i just cant live without them. They chose me. I chose them. Its the only breed that is right for ME. and I know this. I love showing (only been to a few so far, as i am fairly new) but i love it and i enjoy meeting new people that share the love of basenjis too and I enjoy the fun and sport of it. I really want to do what is right with breeding, which is why i have waited to find a good breeder to help me along and to help guide me as my mentor. Miah is a wonderful dog, so close to standard. and so pretty. nice pedigree and the most supurb temperament also. With my mating (dorsey x miah) I expect great things! Me and my co owner are really excited as is the sire owner. We cant wait for this litter. I know breeding is a huge controversy because of all the unwanted pets in the world, but i have been there with rescueing and if i truely didnt feel like my dog was worthy of it, and i truely didnt feel like I could do it CORRECTLY, i honestly wouldnt. but thank you for your input. I know you care, as do we. but i really am trying to do it right. Spent lots of money getting tests done, and finding a really nice bitch to start with, and getting the knowledge. (I got my first basenji 11 years ago! and i have researched and experienced the whole time!) After 11 years, i feel i am finally ready to take the step and breed my bitch to start my kennel where i want to continue to show and create loving, family pets. as well as fun things like coursing and agility, etc..

I agree, I wait to be around a pup for a bit and then often pick a name that ties to the registered name; FoPaw's Designated Driver "Sober" FoPaw's Little Bit of Luck "Clover" FoPaw's Oh My God "Odin" FoPaw's Makes U Wonder "Stevie" FoPaw's Lead Singer "Diva" there are many more but these are a couple that come to mind, owners have picked similar matches. Jordan Reed has chosen some very clever names as well. Atarasi D'Lucks Edition "Eddie" (Clover's brother) Atarasi About Face "Sarge" Atarasi All About Me "Mimi" I love playing with names like this. I like Oakley myself but I think you'll be surprised to know exactly what his name is when you get him home. Good luck with the new baby. Therese

LOL when we were getting Sayblee, Leora had me on the net and we came up with 100 potential names. I picked my top ten and she crossed them all off. (she was about 9 at the time) She picked Sayblee. So Sayblee became my dog but I insisted on naming the next one, hence Arwen. But it turned out good since she doesn't yodel, but gives a very clear loud R a lot.
