    Hi my name is Sandy and my husband is Mike. Our Basenji is Ike. We recently adopted him, he is 4 yrs 8 mo. This is our 3rd Basenji, 2nd to adopt. Our first was a female and we got her as a puppy. I am so glad to find this forum as we are having some issues with Ike. We got him from BRAT in Dallas Texas area. We knew that he had problems with men/boys when we adopted him, however since we had previous experience with the breed, we were granted the ok from BRAT. Ike is so skittish around Mike and just paces the floor, will not take food or treats from him. However, when we go to bed, Ike goes right to him and lets him pet him, I think this is strange. We hired a trainer to come over and work with us. He suggests that I put Ike on a leash, then hand it over to Mike and then he reels him in. The whole time Mike has him on the leash Ike is stiff and his eyes are bulging, Mike tries to brush him and make him comfortable, to bond with him and walks him in the neighborhood and this does not seem to be working, he is still just going all around and away from Mike. I am the one that is getting frustrated, I'm home with Ike all day and he is great, he does everything I tell him, he even does tricks, roll over, high five, down dog. Like I said we knew that he has issues when we adopted him, its just that we thought by now (1 1/2) months he would warm up to Mike, I've never met a dog that did not like him. We think he has been seriously abused in his early puppyhood.
    Please, if anyone has suggestions as to what we should do next, we would appreciate all input.

    @rgk9ruler My B detested her Crate unless we were in the car going someplace. They must get into the Crate for Vets, etc. Give them something to chew on and put the Crate so they can see you. Practice taking short trips so they will get used to it. These Dogs are so curious that they like new things! It worked for my Dog because I always want all of my Animals to be safe! :) A

    Welcome to the forum, I have 3 Meisterhaus Basenjis and one Meisterhaus whippet, all of mine have finished their show and coursing championships and recently the last one earned her versatile basenji award by earning her race title.

    She has been fixed. As for the falconi, I dont think any of the basenjis that I have have every been tested for it. as for the country hounds and hearts place. I went by the address listed on the site and it appears that no one has been there for a while. Very scary looking place.. overgrown, strange smell, fence pieced together with kennel/crate doors, vacant car. I called the number and it was disconnected and I tried a second number and have been waiting for over a week for someone to call back. We are going to give it the college try to get her "normal" but I want to make sure that I am not doing her a dis-service. I have time before we are slated to move but I also want to make sure that she would be happy. I know deep down that I have not been a great owner to her but I love her very much and don't want to see her harmed in any way. Thanks everyone for the coments and suggestions

    @gneigum: Thank you for the compliments to my dogs. There is not much that I can share about them, as they have only been in our home about three months, although my wife & I agree that it seems like they've been here all their lives. We were blessed to become aquainted with Simone Gaudet - www.beaubri.com - who gave us the lead. The dogs names are Nathaniel (6 in Jan. 09)pedigree at http://www.beaubri.com/Nate.html & Callie (5 in Nov. 08)pedigree at http://www.terrarust.com/pedigree-callie.html. They are, for the most part, very well behaved, & have adjusted extremely well to our home. Callie is like a bossy sister to Nate, & lets him know when she is unhappy with his presence. She is also very protective of her new home & I have to work with her to curb some agression issues with some visitors. Aside from that, we are enjoying them very much. I would enjoy hearing about your B(s) also. G Nate is my girl, Ruby's (Ch. Eldorado 'n Akuaba's Bejeweled) sire. :)

    Welcome, Andyboy! I too had see the movie and loved it as a kid. I haven't seen it in years so I don't remember it. I have the book though and plan to read it with my daughter this summer. The movie introduced me to the breed, but it was ultimately allergies that led me to own one, much like JazzysMom. Enjoy the forum…I know I do. Post more pictures when you can!
