F B lost in DC - BRAT facebook page

  • I copied this from the BRAT Facebook page, it is not my dog

I picked up a pair of basenji rescues in WV Sunday evening. At the City Paws vet on 14th St NW, around 6pm, a vet tech took the female out for a walk and she escaped him. She is running around DC without tags, afraid of people, completely lost with no idea where to go. She will hopefully respond to her bonded male. If anyone sees a tri-color (black, white, and tan) Basenji – who may be pregnant -- please do not try to chase her, as she will flee. Call me at 202-270-8447 and let me know where she is sighted and I'll bring the male with me to see if she'll come to us. She does not respond to her name, Vickie, but she may recognize it if you just speak calmly to her. It is going to be in the low 20s temperature tonight and we really need to find t his girl. Thanks so much for any assistance you can provide.

  • Oh nooo! May be pregnant and it's 20 degrees. I really hope a nice person got her and took her into their home. I shared the FB post.

  • This dog has been found, safe & sound! I always love the happy endings!

A good "safety" exercise to practice is a command that tells your dog treats are in the offing, and use it at irregular intervals when you are walking. Combine the command with a total release of pressure on the leash, preferably when your dog has firm tension on said leash. Then if something unexpected happens you have a built in reaction of the dog to look to you for a reward. This won't work if your dog is pursuing a major distraction, but should give you an edge if you have an equipment failure in otherwise neutral conditions. (you can carry this one step further by "accidentally" dropping the leash in a controlled area, or with a light line attached for safety, and practice until the dog turns to you when it feels a total release)

Oh dear, I just don't believe, IMO, that a lost dog roaming around will be "OK". Have the vets and humane societies in the area been checked recently? Are there posters up for this dog?

Thanks for the update MacPack. A great ending to the story. If you see Kaisers folks again, tell them we all send our well wishes to them and their dogs.
