The Christmas "Beast" that almost wasn't

Basenji Talk

  • Picture this.. (see attached pic before reading the Christmas Beast story. Isn't he precious????)

Christmas Day…..Dry weather in South King County Washington, Roast Beast on the BBQ awaiting carving, Au Jus & rolls warming in the kitchen for French Dips, Christmas birds chirping in the yard, 2 Basenjis wearing jingle bells hopping, jumping & digging in the yard, happiness & Holiday joy abound

Cue "Jaws" music...dun dun dun dun dun.....dun dun dun dun....

Husband rushing in the back door: "Well, Christmas is ruined!!!! The worst thing that could've happened did!!!!!"

"What the heck?", I ask innocently, knowing it has something to do with a basenji~!!!!! DUH!!!!!

"The little $$##^%$$%^% somehow grabbed the roast off the BBQ then had the AUDACITY to growl at me when I went to grab it back!!!!" Just a gnaw or 2 off it and some grass from the lawn, not a total loss.

Now, the basenji in reference is 20lbs soaking wet and is as scrawny as a rat! (see attached pic) Of course, it's not the "Angel" basenji that is too lazy to think about jumping up to grab food. Are you kidding? If you are patient, it comes to you!!!!!!

The mental picture of him working, hopping, working to get that roast is priceless! I checked his paws and he must've waited for the BBQ to cool down.

Who the heck says this breed isn't smart???? Poor little baby boy rescue....

Is that the face of a "roast beast robber"?

Love my baby BRAT Hunter to death! Merry Christmas!!!!

"and the Grinch himself, carved the first piece of Roast Beast....."

  • ROFLMAO.

Long ago a friend posted the funniest story about his chow, Micio.

Says both families were there for Thanksgiving. He said they had just sat down when they heard her thundering feet coming down the hall toward the dining room…someone had left the bedroom door open where he was "secured".

He said he grabbed the turkey, his wife grabbed the stuffing and cranberry sauce, and he was praying the other relatives would guard the rest of the food. Says this BLUR went past him over the table and he was in shock until he heard his father in law laugh, looked and THERE was Micio, safely on the other side of the table, her mouth full of...... THE NAPKINS.

Fortunately, Chows, like Basenjis, have paper fetishes.

  • It was the CAT, I tell ya, the CAT did it.

  • Kismet was safely (and securely) shut away upstairs during any food and door traffic activities so I have no good stories to tell… but I was watching mythbusters the other day and on their holiday special they talked about the damage a frozen turkey could do to a dog! I didn't get to see the whole show, but one part showed their "dog" and with the turkey falling on it causing the back to fully crack. I never even thought of something like that ever happening. Hold on to them turkeys and other heavy meats tight!

Tho I did find out my baby is a scaredy cat. When we'd let her down after people came over she'd stand on the stairs watching someone and back up anytime they made a move toward her. Then step forward barking a bit then back up the stairs.. was funny ;) She also made a dash after being walked and let in the front door for the back patio (sliding glass door was closed at the time!) And full speed right into it... unfortunately that's not the first time she's had door run-ins LOL. She seems to learn her lesson right after and checks to see if a door is there, but forgets it later on.

  • A dear friend of mine rescued a sweet little basenji boy a few years ago. She had no idea that basenjis can fly. They had Parker for a couple of weeks when they ordered pizza. My friend was upstairs with Parker when her son called up the stairs and said that the pizza had arrived. She started down the stairs with Parker coming down in front of her. Her son was sitting at the table with a slice of pizza half way to his mouth. Parker jumped off the stairs and sailed through the air right past the son's face. Everyone was in awe when they realized that Parker was sitting on the other side of the room with the pizza in his mouth!!

  • LOL yep, chows and basenji can fly. :)

  • Ok, Vicki… I have to know... did you guys share the rest of the roast beast, or did you trade it in for hot dogs?

  • Since Hunter is a big licker, we figured it couldn't have been any worse than his daily face washings.

I gladly ate the "roast beast".

Clearly, that will prove my love for my bs!!!!!

  • He looks so innocent in that picture! The face of an angel but the mind of a demon!

  • Your stories are a riot! We are usually pretty careful not to leave anything where our B's can jump, climb or fly - but - Heaven help you if you are casually eating anything when not at the table and your arm comes low enough for a quick run-by! We've lost sandwiches, cookies, hot dogs. . . . the list goes on!

  • Very funny, too bad no one had a camera to record the "action".

  • Houston

Too funny and YES, way too smart…

  • I recently had just peeled a banana to eat, while holding onto the bottom of the banana, turned my head just an instant from the banana in front of me(mind you its about chest high) and the banana was happy being gulped down by my Cody. Never even jostled my hand.

  • The reason I can't get mad when my basenjis have swiped food is because they look completely innocent afterwards, almost like, "Wait. You wanted me to eat that, right? Did I do something wrong? ":D

  • giggle this thread makes me laugh.

i snapped these shots a while ago of our little miss.

Sittin all innocently (look at that face)…

Oh hi… can i has some food please?

She didnt steal anything that day but i was eating shark and went to refill my drink which was several steps away thinking she wont touch it… the basenji is asleep .... turn around to find the sleeping basenji helping herself to a little piece of meat lol ninja style. haha thankfully i was finished my meal and it was only a few mouthfulls left (which she was getting anyway) lol

I think I saw Sophie on a b video website and I was so glad that someone else's B made that noise I showed it to my husband and daughter. Thanks for posting that video because as a new B owner we thought we had some kind of devel dog!!! She does it the most to our oldest dog Josie. There are nights she even does it from under our covers in bed when she hears Josie moving out in the living room. Too Funny!!!!

She-Ra helps clean off the Peanut Butter knife (held so she won't cut herself (even though it's a butter knife I've heard stories)) when I'm done with it. Gonna have to try the mashed potato beater this Thanksgiving (it's her first…she's seen this big bird in the fridge but can't quite figure out what to do about it! :) ).

Basenji seem to be the masters of the non-verbal put down. And I also agree with Basenji Boy's comment, reminds of that bumper sticker: the more I know of people, the better I like my dog. What is the correct plural of Basenji? 'Basenjis' or 'Basenji'? A Yodel of Besenjis?

If I put my arm around Nika when we're on the couch and my hand rests on her leg, she'll lick my hand for 10 minutes.

@Lenora: Even if you've got enough bed for yourself and 15 basenjis YOU are only allowed a 6 inch wide strip along the edge and that's only if you don't have to bend your knees! I'm a right or left side sleeper but I start out on the right. Abbey positions herself behind my knees. When I wake up and feel the need to turn left, I do that. Abbey grumbles and growls, then she climbs over me and fits herself behind my knees again. Once I slept on my back and dreamed I was trapped in an avalanche under an enormous boulder. When I woke up Abbey the Boulder was on top of me! LOL! So true, so true! Abbey the Boulder - hee hee!

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
