Skin sores and hair loss after IV fluids

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • our 5 y.o. female b simone, had a bout of HGE two weeks ago. if you don't know about it, its sudden onset of severe diarrhea and vomiting with lots of bloody mucus, like the insides of the stomach are being shed. very horrible and scary. worse yet, there is no known cause for this condition. the symptoms are always the same, and all the standard parasites/viruses are ruled out.
she would throw up any water she drank, we immediately concerned about dehydration. we have an awesome vet that admitted our girl for two days over thanksgiving. she gave her something to suppress the vomiting (can't remember what it was exactly) and began rehydrating her with IV.
well she recovered after a couple days, and when she came home she was pretty swollen up, which is common after a lot of IV fluids. she absorbed all the fluid, but her hair began to fall out on one side and her ears too. these were the places most swollen on her body.
and where the hair fell out big black spots appear on her skin and the rest of the skin looks really raw, almost like it has been burned. fortunately she is recovering fairly well. her personality is back, she has a very healthy appetite, moves around a lot, healthy stools, but her poor skin is healing very slowly and is very painful. we wash all her wounds 2-3 times and day, slather her with neosporin, and then pin a tshirt on her. she is also taking clavamox and just finished prednisone.
we've had 3 vets look at her and they can't figure it out. they have seen dogs swell after iv's and even have a little hair loss, but never the rawness or the black spots. the black spots almost looked like dead skin, but are beginning to fade now.
so just thought i would throw this out there and see if anyone has any thoughts!

I was only recommending a shampoo to use in the future, not one that would clear up any skin problems. If the dog has allergies, she needs to be careful about what kind of general shampoo to use. Jennifer

Spencer gets that on his thighs sometimes in the summer. I thought it was a heat rash, but maybe he's been around prickly stuff in the yard. I rub a little lotion on it, and he seems to think that's the equivalent of a doggy massage. I watch him to make sure he doesn't lick it off, and the red is usually gone in a day.

Could she be scratching?…I have one that when she scratches her neck, even a little, she gets a reaction like you are explaining. It is a bad flea year here for us...so she also is super reactive if she gets a flea bite, then she will start scratching, and get a hot spot, like immediately...

It sounds like one of my Basenji's (Bungwa) ears. He is losing hair in patches on his ears. I first put it down to him pushing his head through the wire fence but thinking back one of his predecessors had the same but also his nose as you describe. It's a very long time ago and i can't remember how we trated it nor what causes it. I'm off to the vet with him next week for a diagnosis and treatment. I'll be interested to hear what your vet thinks.

@YodelMa: … and supplement generously with fresh Omega 3 ...with a quality Omega 3 supplement–the good stuff isn't cheap, but everyone remarks on my pack's shiny coats. Plus it's an anti-inflammatory, helps keep them young & healthy. As sighthounds, B's have less oily skin that's prone to dryness in winter climates! YodelMa - can I ask you what the brand is of the Omega 3 and where you get it (I'm in B.C.)? When it comes to my Kipawa, I'll pass on my lattes to make sure he gets products that are quality.

@FortheLoveofStella: Stella has very short hair, and she is flaky a lot (in more ways than one!!) Do you need a prescription for the omega3 or fish oil? Or can you just the human equivalent at cvs? Human equivalent is fine to use
