Puppy Feeding Questions

    Kong is about 3 1/2 months old. I have been feeding him 3 times a day. I normally come home at lunch time to feed him. I have been doing 7am, 1pm, and 7pm. I love being able to come home at lunch time for some puppy love but some days at work are really busy. I'm wondering if the 3x a day feeding schedule is necessary. Should I continue on this schedule or if I can modify it to 7am, 5pm, 8pm or drop down to twice a day.
    I am feeding him a total of about 1 1/4 cup.
    He has been great about potty training and doesn't have crate accidents but I also don't know if his little bladder could go 8 hours. I wouldn't make it a habit but there are about 2 days a week at work that I would love to be able to work through lunch.

    I feed 3x's a day until they are 4 1/2 months or well into teething. And even when I go to 2 feeding, they still get a "snack" of cookies 1/2 way between those feeding times.

    8 hours is pushing the limit at 3 1/2 months, IMO. And many have a bit of regression during teething. I would suggest that after he is 6 months, 8 hours would not be too much of a strain.

    Thank you for the reply. I will wait before I try it then. I can always get a dog walker for a day or two if work gets to busy.

    I totally agree with Tanza. Personally I find that at approximately 4 to 5 months they start to show lack of interest in the 3rd feed - it is then I cut down.

    I appreciate that you are anxious to work through your lunch hour but if I were you i'd wait a little. Kongo is still a baby.

    From what I've seen (well bred) basenji puppies range from $900-$1500 depending on show quality. Like Krunzer said, puppies are cute but are A LOT of work. I've raised 2 basenjis and 2 goldens and while a lot of it is the same.. the basenjis seem to discover new ways to be mischievous that my goldens would never have dreamed of doing. Be prepared to replace many MANY things because odds are they will destroy them! Elliot isn't a climber but my last one was so even things high up on tables and counters were not safe from him. My current B is 10 months and going though the "I forgot every good behavior you taught me" phase. This includes trying to jump off the table at shows to play with the other dogs and the judge @______@. Now that I've strayed away from the topic.. A BRAT, rescue or retired show dog might be the best fit for you! I know of several breeders who will sell their retired show dogs because they simply can't keep them all. Before I got my first B I looked into purchasing a finished champion to learn how to show dogs with but ended up with a puppy.

    @agilebasenji: You really, really do not want to bring a puppy home that is younger than 8 weeks old. In many states it is illegal AND the puppy misses out on learning valuble puppy skills, most importantly bite inhibition. Many breeders even suggest taking a new puppy home around 10 weeks. This is SO TRUE!!! 7 wks is way to young to be bring home a puppy and taking it from his/her littermates…. I don't let puppies go till they are 10wks... And please do not just take someone's word for it that there is no Fanconi.... please check it out for yourself. This is not to say that people are not honest.. but as they always say "Buyer Beware".... it is your responsibility to verify. Also were there any other health tests done? As Kathy pointed out, most of the responsible breeders all know each other... so I would have to ask the same thing? Who has 7wk puppies? I have not heard of a litter.....

    The only reasons I would not crate little bs with big bs is (1) I don't want any fighting so you would have to play that one by ear (2) If the little one potties in the crate accidentally the big b has to suffer too. But I only have 1 so thats all I could think of

    @ChristyRutherford: So they are born a bit darker? very cool:) I want him :p Most times it seems that the reds "seem" darker when born…but as they grow.. the red becomes... red... gggg

    HOW CUTE!!! I love the one ear up & one down…I wish mine could do that!! Definitely something senji about this little guy but rest assured he's 100% CUTE

    On tv this morning they showed some dogs that were to be adopted at Petsmart from the Humane Society. One of them they said was a basenji/terrier mix. That dog was huge and he didn't look anything like a basenji to me. No batwing ears but the tail was curled.
