Hello from Denmark

  • Hello

First I have to say, that I don't own a Basenji at the moment :)
I have 2 Amstaff's under the kennel name Flipside.
I have a 5-year-old male called Ludwig and a 4-year-old female called Frida.

From the 1. July 2010 the breed, along with 11 other breeds, is band from Denmark, so I'm looking for a new breed to join our life!

We had a daugther the 31. January 2010 and is enjoying our time with her!

I love to show and train my dogs. We have been to shows in Denmark, Sweden and Poland.

I will just have a look around in the forum and see, what to expect from a Basenji and get a lot of information about the breed.

  • Welcome Susan. The breed ban is too bad, it sounds like you have 2 very lovely dogs. Does it prohibit just new pups, what about your adults? Can you keep them, or do you have to re-home them? Bans cause so much distress.

Basenjis are sleek and muscular like the Amstaff, but not always as willing to please the human! My basenjis seem to like staffs at the park (unless they are intact males!).

  • Welcome to you and your family. With the banning of amstaffs, what do they ask you to do? Can you keep the dogs you have and just not breed or have puppies (from any source)? What a sad situation.

You will learn so much about basenjis from this group of very nice and honest folks. I will be getting my first basenji at some point in the future, and I find everything I read here very helpful.

I agree with you - the ban doesn't not help anything..

The following breed is now ban in DK:
Pitbull Terrier (already illegal), Tosa Inu (already illegal), American Staffordshire, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerbel, Kangal, Central Asian Ovtcharka, Caucasian Ovtcharka, Southern Russian Ovtcharka, Tornjak and Sarplaninac.

Puppies and imported dogs (and also mixed dogs from the 13 breeds) is after the 17. Marts 2010 illegal in Denmark and must be put to sleep. The problem is, that not all vets want to kill healthy dogs! So that causes a lot of problem at the moment..

The dogs that already are in Denmark must wear muzzle and a 2 m leash at all time! The dogs can not change owner in Denmark - but they are allowed to change owner, if the owner lives in another country..

Amstaff's is usually nice to other dogs and humans if they are raised the right way! The problem in Denmark is that to many inexperienced people have made too many mixed puppies and sold them in Denmark.. All the problems in the newspapers has been with mixed dogs :(

    Read my other answer :)

And thanks - I hope this forum will help me to pick the right Basenji one day.

  • So glad that you can keep your nice adults. Keep reading about basenjis, they are great dogs!

  • Welsom to you Suzan and your Amstaffs.

The only breed I have personal acquaintance with on the DK banned list is the Kangal. I owned and worked with one for almost 10 years and she was the most equble dog any one could have wished for. She was kind to other animals and to humans and especially children which she adored! My experience of most of the others in the UK has been much the same. I am utterly amazed!

  • Welcome to the forum Suzan and congratulations on your little daughter.
You have certainly come to the right place to learn about Basenjis.

  • Thansk a lot :)

I'm looking forward to learn more about the breed !

Patty> No, most of the breeds on the list is good dogs in the right hands!

I knew about the new law.. it's crazy I think, we are going to add a Dogo Argentino and I received the news too a few months ago.. :(

My heart breaks reading your wonderful story of Dinah - it is so clear she is a huge part of your heart -you will have such wonderful memories of her when it is her time to give up the pain. I also do not believe dogs don't have souls - of course they do - the unconditional love they give, the way they try to help when you are emotionally suffering, the joy they get when they see you coming after a separation - all these and more are proof they are very soulful. A loving companion dog is God's gift. All our hearts are with you, and our tears flow with yours. God bless.

I look forward to your pictures. I'm a technophobe too - I keep telling myself I can do it but so far haven't posted any. One of my bitches was spoiled for the show ring by such a judge who didn't know how to approach a hound (although he was a Saluki judge and should have!). She was experienced at showing as well but was traumatised because when she backed away at his front on, silly voice approach she nearly fell from the table! Of course she blamed the fall on his approach. I worked on her intensively but to no avail. Yes, Basenjis on the whole are friendly and they never forget a friend either!

Welcome and kudos to you for helping with rescues! It sounds like Kowboy was a great introuction to the breed. I'm sorry for your loss of him and Indy. this is a great place to share and keep memories alive. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a speedy relocation back to your family in CA!
