    I got up this morning and went outside to say hi to dogs. Lana was playing with something that she was very reluctant to give up. When I finally got ahold of it, it turned out to be a squirrel tail! Then I went searching around the yard, and found a couple of small pieces that seemed to be the remnants of the squirrel! Those dogs ate the entire thing - fur, bones, all - except the tail. Sorry, no pictures - too graphic. I am 100% convinced that it was Lana who caught the poor thing, the other two dogs are two slow to do that. This is the second squirrel this year. The first one was a few months ago. That one I managed to see them drag around the back yard, and I took it from them when it was still alive. It was too severely damaged and had to be humanely finished. This one was not that lucky. Just for those who are going to say that squirrels can transmit diseases - I know all of that, and I am not particularly happy about them catching the squirrel, but nothing I can do. We have huge old trees and squirrels come to the yard all the time. Plus my dogs have all the shots imaginable.

    I would do more frequent fecal tests, to make sure the dogs didn't get any worms from
    their "catch".

    With catching and eating yard critters, that can lead to tape worm… so good to have their stool checked more often

    And your right, that is what dogs do.... catch and eat!!!

    Yep. They also get dewormed 3-4 times a year (same schedule as my horses, easier to keep track that way). What surpized me is that Lana is really picky with her meals, even with treats and she eats dirty nasty squirrel, hair and all… yuck!

    I think your dogs are giving you a silent hint to change their food into BARF ;-)
    I would not worry about the squirrels, frankly if they were in good shape of body and mind they would not be caught by a basenji ;-)

Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

    @melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much.     You're doing a great job introducing the cat to the basenjis, I would continue to do what you're doing, but don't leave them alone just yet. I would keep them in different rooms while you are away. Also, as another person said, the cat and the bird will be more of a challenge, since the cat is more likely to hunt the bird. Keep the supervision going with all three species. My basenjis always wanted to chase cats they saw outside, but did not chase the cats we had, because they had been socialized and they thought of the cats as part of the pack.     So far my gate is still working. We don't ever step over the top though, I'm hoping Moses doesn't try to go over the top if he doesn't see us do it? He does try and throw his weight at the area thats latched to break thru :) Lets hope he does figure it out, he's still just a puppy.

    When EL D is inside he watches the squirrels intently but only when they dare come up on the deck does he go nutso. He'll cry, he'll twirl, he'll race, he'll barely wait for me to open the door! He's caught plenty of rabbits but no squirrels so far.

    at the dog park occasionally you will see a dog fight in the larger breeds, they typically play rougher…..more chomping action vs. basenji boxing.... the typical dog park protocol is pulling them apart, or the safe route is the bucket of water....total distraction! can you imagine doing that with basenjis.....screams like little girls!! LOL
