Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Thought I'd share these caution items from our veterinary clinic (I didn't know about the pine needles) …

Keep pets away from holiday buffets and don?t share your seasonal snacks. Alcoholic beverages, chocolate, coffee, onions, fatty foods, yeast dough, and macadamia nuts can all cause problems.

Christmas tree branches definitely delight pets, who've been known to chew on them―and whatever decorations may be hanging from them. Place small, breakable ornaments high up, and keep tinsel and garland out of your pet's reach, as these can get caught in his throat. Be sure pine needles, which can be toxic, don't get eaten. And be careful to secure your tree so it doesn?t topple over if pets bump into it or climb on it (especially in houses with cats.)

Be careful to place holiday greenery such as holly, mistletoe, lilies, and amaryllis out of your pets? reach. While beautiful to look at, they can make your pet sick if ingested.

Breakable items such as glass and other ornaments pose a threat, along with electrical cords, heated decorative bulbs, hooks, and a wide variety of other adornment items. Don?t give your pets an opportunity to chew on or play with any decorations.

  • I didnt know about pine needles either. I have pine trees all around my house. Though I don't think they would forage on them. But if the tree was in the house it would be a different story. For sure they would have it knocked down the second I got it up. I opted for a fake tree and put it in a room they dont usually have access to.
Thank you for the good info!

@smharr4: I also have a Care Credit card (http://www.carecredit.com/) which will allow me to pay the bill at the vet immediately, then I can just transfer the money between bank accounts (which takes a few days) so the Care Credit card is payed off before any interest accrues. At least one of our local vets also has a 'promissory note' payment scheme where you pay half when you pick up your pet then spreads the rest out over 3-4 months, that can come in handy too sometimes. Thanks for the tip. I will ask my vet if he has any 'promissory note' scheme. That sounds good, and…yes it would come in handy!

The fanconi test needs to be ordered from the OFA website, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html Have you talked to Nilo's breeder about health testing. Without pedigree information his tests alone don't provide a very complete picture since disorders like PRA are late onset.

@eoy: Just as an update, I've been in contact with Marjukka and hopefully I'll be getting a tri girl this winter. I was also at my first basenji show today, and Klassic's Daydream Believer (Faruk) came first, not only in his group but overall (sorry I don't know the correct terms). I hope to be able to post some pictures here in some months :) Good for you! Can't wait to see puppy pics in a couple of months!! And Faruk is a really nice male!

Perm records for hips/elbows are after 2yrs of age, so Oakley is too young. Some do Prelims but that is usually in the case of a male that is going to be used at stud before 2yrs. Keep in mind for hip and/or elbow results that unlike Fanconi testing it is Optional to post the results if they are not Excellent, Good or Fair - Owner option.. same with Thyroid. There is a place on the forms to mark if you want the results posted regardless of the outcome. Many people DO NOT CHECK this box… therefore if the dog is dysplastic, the results are not shown. So read that into the results.... and I know of Dysplastic Basenjis that are NOT in the data base. That said, hips are not a huge concern as in other breeds, but there are problems out there.... IMO, I would have the hips done... elbows, would not worry about that too much... Sedated? Depends on your Vet... some Vets will do without, some will not do hips without. My two girls were just done, both without, we have a mobile Vet that does testing and they go to most all the shows, makes it really easy and no sedation. I have had both ways done on my Basenjis over the years.
