New Kidz on the block

Member Introductions
  • Hello all. We are indeed the new kidz on the block. My husband and I showed Basenji's for 22 years but have lost interest in that aspect of Basenji life. We have 2 brat girls that we adopted on Christmas Eve, 8 months after loosing our last girl. We had 3 and they all loved to a ripe old age, 17 yrs for 2 and l4 for our first. For the first time in that long era, we have waste baskets that are out, bathroom doors that are open and undies in an open laundry basket. Our new girls have given us quite the ride, and both had to go to Canine College for a week, expensive but well worth it. She showed us what we were doing wrong, not what the girls were doing wrong…..a great concept! Belle is a red and white and has OCD, if that is possible for a dog. Kelle' is a tri and just a complete lover. Kelle' is pronounced Keylee. I will have trouble with that for the rest of her life, everyone wants to call her Kelly. Darrell and I decided on Basenji's 8 months before we wed, in l988 and though they are somewhat difficult to raise, as you know, they do capture your heart and mind, not to mention your pocketbook, your time and your sanity. We still have housebreaking issues on occasion, they are 4-5 years old, and are a little willful about changing their habits, but we know we can overcome eventually. We did find that during the 8 months of being without a dog in the house, that no matter what we did, Basenji was the very only breed we wanted. Corgi's came close but way too much hair. So that is us, pretty much in the Basenji way of life. Hope to meet many of you at the Convention.

  • Hi Joan and basenji family, welcome to the forum. Looking forward to hearing about basenjis from you, as with all of that experience I am sure you can share quite a few stories with us. Have you any pictures of your new girls? You'll see that we love pictures here!

  • Welcome to the Forum.. I'm sure you'll get on top of any problems - 22 years must have taught you something!!! Being without must have been terrible despite the open laundry basket!!

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

Before you get a puppy… go to the Basenji Club of Canada and Basenji Club of America websites and read up on Fanconi and other heritable diseases. ANY breeder not testing for these disease is NOT someone you should spend your time or money on one of their puppies. Too bad you didn't look 4-5 months ago... there was a lovely litter of Khani's pups up in Drumheller! Best of luck to you!

Welcome to the forum. Great story too. I especially like the description of your other dog "Betty the Sheprador Chowtriever ." That's Funny! My basenji/whippet mix also came from a local shelter. She wasn't there long enough, or perhaps they didn't know much about bs, but they only had her listed as whippet mix. Didn't take long for a dog savy friend of mine to mention the word "basenji." No doubt in my mind, she is basenji and something. I picked her out and my mother paid for her. Best Christmas present I ever got!

I wouldn't recommend getting a basenji until you've organized your new schedule with baby. basenjis are wonderful dogs, but require a lot of attention and stimulation. If you can't provide that, he could become a frustrated dog and cause mischeif. I've also read that they aren't the best with children. I haven't had the best experience with my basenji and daughter. It has a lot to do with the fact that we can't give him sufficient attention and exercise like he needs. he also hasn't adjusted to my daughter's presence either. that may not be a problem for you because you're having baby first then dog. they say its always a plus because it allows the child to establish a dominence over the dog, since child was there first. i don't want to be a sour apple, but i just want to let families with children know that it can be difficult and dangerous if proper care isn't given. its also unfair to the precious breed if they cant have the active life they need and crave.
