Patchy Hair Loss - any thoughts or suggestions?

    Hey all,

    Our 1.5 year old female red-and-white basenji has some patchy hair loss developing on her right side. At first I just thought it was an abrasion, and wasn't too worried about it, but I've noticed that the patch has gotten larger and a few smaller patches have appeared. Otherwise, she is a very healthy girl. I know there are many causes of hair loss in dogs, and I'll probably make her an app't at the vet soon, but I just wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone has had anything similar happen to their dog… any thoughts/suggestions?

    I've attached a photo - not sure how well you can see the patches in it though.

    First thing to do is see a Vet and make sure it is nothing medical, like mites… which they can determine with a skin scrapping at the office.... and work from there....

    @beth314 I use the VetIQ MultiVitamin. WalMart sells it in the pet section and online. Sam's Club used to have it, they may in your area, but my local Sam's took it off the shelf.

    Yes, please do let us know. Personally I never have to deal with fleas but use a product called 'Billy No Mates' which is a herbal mix obtainable from www.csjk9.com I'm not sure whether they ship abroad but do have a look at the details on their site.

    Oakley will Indulge in both the eating of and rolling around in of poop…mainly horse or cow...we've yet to encounter a bird or cat poop situation...The sickos!

    Could she be scratching?…I have one that when she scratches her neck, even a little, she gets a reaction like you are explaining. It is a bad flea year here for us...so she also is super reactive if she gets a flea bite, then she will start scratching, and get a hot spot, like immediately...

Plus it's an anti-inflammatory, helps keep them young & healthy. As sighthounds, B's have less oily skin that's prone to dryness in winter climates! YodelMa - can I ask you what the brand is of the Omega 3 and where you get it (I'm in B.C.)? When it comes to my Kipawa, I'll pass on my lattes to make sure he gets products that are quality.

    @tanza: I have not… So I would say it is just due to shedding... they do get undercoat on the tail too, so would not be uncommon Good to know! Thanks :)
