Not eating enough 6 month HELP

    Hello guys we have a 6 month old Basenji and shes not eating a lot we put out 2 cups a day and shes nibbling at it and not really eating it's the same food as the breeder(we've only had her home for 2 weeks). Any suggestions were trying to give her lots of positive feed back also regarding this. tried wetting the food putting other tuff on it but not a lot of luck. Her energy is still really good but she's clearly showing some weight lose int he ribs and haunch.

    2 cups is too much food per day. She won't starve. Are you feeding the same food the breeder was? What is it? Don't leave the food down too long. It's a big change as well arriving at a new home away from her litter mates.

    Has she been checked by the vet? If she has been given a clean bill of health then stop putting out 2 cups of food. Start feeding her on schedule. I feed my dogs twice a day. My pup gets about 1/2 cup in the morning and around 1/2 cup in the evening with some snacks during the day. When he hits a growth spurt he sometimes needs an additional meal to help give a few more calories. If he doesn't eat when offered food then the food gets put up until the next meal time. A healthy dog will not starve itself.

    Yep giving her oneji same as the breeder did only reason I'm alittle worried is shes thinned out thougth the body. All be it I think her activity levels have gone up as well since come home with us. Thanks guys. Have been doing scheduled feeding with her but am just nervous since I don't see her eating that much, and ses thinning. Vets have sai d it's most likely nerves to just seeing if theres good recommendations or if theres something more we could be doing.

    Put the food down for 15 minutes then take it away. Do NOT leave it out for her to pick at until the next feeding. There are two reasons for this. The first is you want to know exactly how much she is really eating at each feeding. The second is by removing her access to food in between feedings you will teach her to eat when food is offered because food won't be available whenever she wants it.

    As for her thinnning out, my puppy boy is going to be 17 weeks old on Thursday and is a bit skinny this week since he had a growth spurt. Puppies tend to go through cycles of just a little pudgy, just right, a bit skinny and back again as they grow and their calorie demands flux depending on the amount of growth.

    I use Fastrack liquid dispersible. Although the container is expensive, (about $44 shipped http://www.marvalstables.com/happybellies/what_does_it_cost.htm ) one canister should last you many months, I estimate about 6, with one dog. Testimonial== had ROTTWEILER (ie massively more air and smell produced lol) who was so bad we would not let her even sleep in the HALLWAY. When we had a sick pony we put on the horse formula, I decided to try my dogs on the liquid dispersible. The gas stopped. Okay I know that it is very healthy, new studies on HUMANS show probiotics may have some really impressive results beyond just healthy digestion. But I won't lie. We kept it in stock to prevent Rottweiler gas. Yogurt sounds good, but the daily cost comes to far more than Fastrack even if you get them on sale at 75 cents or less.

    Luckily I'm in Cattle Country, too–I've got a bunch of leads to follow up. Two of my nieghbours have offered to let me graze a steer with their herd, but we don't have a big enough freezer! Most of the stock is non-registered organic, and I'm told many ranchers who raise for the farmer's market will sell heart, tongue & green tripe for a very good price--provided they're not keeping it for their own dogs! @Debra, the Vet was mostly referring to fat and probiotics, and largely in the quality/freshness sense. But Non-medical diets (in Canada, anyway) may list their primary protein source as Duck, but are allowed a certain percentage of "off label" protein--I think it's 20, maybe 30%--and fat can be from ANY source. Duck has been my go-to protein source for years, even more so than fish...but who can afford prescription hypoallergic duck for multiple dogs? As for probiotics, my previous vet wanted me to try a probiotic blend from Nestle, but the additives to make it taste good were pretty much abbatoir rendering sludge. With two sickly puppymill "babies" and an old "Nannydog" I'm at the stage where I'm afraid to feed them Human Grade meat for fear of making them worse...what a world we live in!

    First, I want to say that my B has liver disease, not kidney…but he is also supposed to be on a low protein diet. He was diagnosed at age 11...he is 15 now! The vet initially suggested Science Diet, and Senji would rather starve to death than eat that, but I digress. To get to the point, I cook for him. Usually boiled chicken or turkey, white meat or legs. The organ meat or red meat stresses his liver. I add rice and vegetables to the broth. He grew up eating mostly Pedigree, but they keep changing the formula. I put a little bit of dry dog food down and then the rice/meat mixture on top. If he doesn't eat the dry dog food, he tends to get runny stools. Throw in any vegetable you think your B will eat, such as carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, etc. (No mushrooms or onions!)He also likes to eat scrambled egg, cottage cheese or yogurt. Occasionally, he'll eat some white fish or salmon too. His coat looks great and he still runs around like a pup!

    There are too many Mayas on this site, i saw the title and thought it was one i'd done lol!! I have the opposite problem with my Maya, she is a little piggie, eats everything in site, and has learned how to get IN (yes, literally!) the "dog-proof" bin to get leftovers lol I've even been sending pics to her breeders asking if she is too fat as im paranoid lol I have her on a bit of a diet now… I feed Maya a mostly raw diet, but she has a meal a day of dry complete puppy food. She eats anything, but LOVES the raw. If you're trying to get your Maya more interested in eating then i'd buy some cheap mince or chicken and cook that for her, i bet she'd eat that no problems :D

    He seems to be getting a little better… I am trying to keep him hydrated and have been feeding him baby food, which he has, for the most part, kept down. He has been peeing multiple times a day and actually pooped this morning which was a breakthrough, but nothing came out that seemed problematic. He is not as active as he normally is, but he does still have a little pep. Hopefully when I get home he will excrete whatever is clogging up his system. The last time this happened, the doc took about 12 x-rays but could not really conclude anything from them. So I ended up paying about $1700 to just let him pass it on his own. They did give him an IV, which I think helped, but I didn't figure out what was going on until he was already dehydrated last time. I think since he is keeping down the water/food I give him and is consistantly peeing thats a good sign. If he starts to act more lethargic, or starts to vomit what i give him, I"ll take him in....
