I tried to get to the bottom of it, but I didn't find much. I did find an article that said food prices in general may be rising due to El Niño, so that may be a factor. Also, an article about general consumer dissatisfaction with higher pet-food prices: http://www.petbusiness.com/January-2016/The-Cost-of-High-Prices/ And, stats from last year that show that pet food prices fell to a fairly low point in August 2015 (which may explain why they're going back up now): http://www.petbusinessprofessor.com/petmarket/buying-pet-products-price-matters-petflation-update-and-more/

When Taste of The Wild had the salmonella recall, due to a plant that makes it and many other dog food brands having salmonella contamination, I switched Kipawa to Acana kibble. He loves it. His coat had more shine with Taste of the Wild bison, but by adding Omega oils to his food, curry comb brushing him daily (very soft bristles), and of course petting him a lot, his coat is looking superb. :)

lvoss: "I highly recommend a long walk with the dogs while the food cools because mine are constantly asking, "Is it done yet? Are you sure it isn't done yet? I think it might be done." I don't have to be "cooking" anything for Gossy - she jumps around asking those same questions when I'm making anything - even when it's "my" food. :)

We give Shaye about a heaping teaspoon of pumpkin in her kibble to firm her stool, and it has helped with the anal gland issue. Also cottage cheese helps, as does a little sweet potatoe. In the first instance, when she had really bad problems, I mixed up drained boiled hamburg, rice, and cottage cheese - she loved it and cured the loose stool situation in about a day and a half. I found you can buy sweet potatoe patties in Walmart, and a half of one heated and mixed with her food in the morning, the other half in the evening, makes her eat it all up right away. Since we've been doing these things, she hasn't had anal gland problems and her stool is always firm.

Weight gain is also an effect of low thyroid. I know that you said that his thyroid "seems" fine… but has the full panel been done? or just the T3 that is done with normal bloodwork... and even at that, what was the level, low normal for a Basenji is TOO low....
