• Can anyone tell me if my newly adopted dog appears to have any basenji in him?

  • Only way to be 100% is to take a blood test.

Personally I can't see any Basenji in him.

  • I see a little basenji in him.

  • There's Basenji in there.

  • In the last picture he looks just like Lana when she dozes off in the sun… Basenji or not, he is a very good-looking dog. What's his name?

  • His name is Toby.

  • Heh, I just don't see it. In my opinion his hind leg doesn't look at all like a Basenji build. And his nose and eyes are too big and look more like a German Shepard or something.

But anyways, we can speculate for years and never know for certain. He does look like this dog at my dog park. I will have to ask the owner when mix she is.

It's a mix so there will be body parts that don't match.

  • Opinions and speculation from people knowledgeable about basenjis are what I was looking for! Thanks for the input! I like his basenji-like qualities which make him a little different than the average mix.

His muzzle is slightly more boxy than on a pure Basenji, and his ears are not quite the right shape…but there are a lot of parts that DO look Basenji...either way...he is very cute, and you are very welcome here....

  • Very handsome dog.

  • Thanks, we love him. We have had him for three months. We saw him on petfinders.com and we made the trip from Orlando to Ruskin, Florida to a very nice no-kill shelter there to get him. I had not had a dog in over 30 years since I was a teenager, but my eleven year old daughter had been pleading for a dog. We got him for her, and I did not realize how rewarding it would be to me to have him as part of our family! We are having so much fun with him and he has turned out to be a very nice companion for all of us!

  • He is very lucky to have fallen into such a loving family.
Do keep us posted on how its going…

Yes, I agree 100%. He could have had a bad experience in that shelter, even if it was no-kill. I am glad it turned out good though. Post more pics of him, too, he is a really good-looking dog.

  • First Basenji's

Does Toby have any Basenji qualities, like liking toilet paper, barooing, meowing, etc.? We had a JRT / Basenji mix [Sakari] before getting Bisa and Sakari had a lot of the Basenji characteristics like that. That's what made us fall in love with the breed.

  • I'd bet money there's some Basenji in there somewhere.

    Well "duh". :p
But you would expect some characteristics of a Basenji to be there.

Anyways, it's a very handsome dog. I just don't see it. I see dogs every day at the park that I think just might have some Basenji in them, but turns out they don't.
