    Are there any owners in Mississippi? I am interested in a basenji but have never been around one.

    Welcome to the Forum! There is tons of good information here, so stick around, research the breed and ask lots of questions. Basenjis are darling, but they can be a handful. If and when you make the decision to get one, go to the Basenji Club of America website and check for a reputable breeder in your area. www.basenji.org

    Are you in Brandon (I'm not familiar with Branfon)? I'm from that general area and you probably won't find a breeder close by. I don't even see anybody in the BCOA roster for Mississippi, unfortunately. You would find some in nearby states like Missouri, Georgia, and Florida. If you go the BRAT route, they may at least know of people in the state with basenjis that you could meet up with.

    You can check at dog shows, but it looks like the next ones are in June. Look at the akc.org web site for when they happen, then the week before it will tell you on the superintendents site how many of each breed are entered. Typically there are not very many, if any basenjis showing in Mississippi. I know of available puppies and adults in TX and GA, not sure if anyone else still has any this late in the season. Most basenjis are born in Dec/Jan as they normally only go in season once a year.

    Hi, we live in Northeast Arkansas and have two basenjis. We would be happy for you to come up sometime and play with our two favorite kids. When I go to google maps it looks like you are about four and a half hours away from us. If you are really interested please feel free to contact me and we can set it up. We love to share our experiences with our basenjis. We were even on the front page of a newspaper recently because of our b's. Wherever we go we always get to talk about our basenjis and we LOVE it.

    When my daughter was pregnant she would stop by once a week and Izzy would always sniff her all over , most of all her stomach and around that area, her husband was afraid of Izzy being around the baby when he came , because Izzy is not a real friendly basenji especially to my son in law. Izzy has never had any aggression toward my grandson, my grandson is 7 now and Izzy is always there to protect him, when the grandson goes down the stairs Izzy is just one step in front of him like he is protecting him from falling. I don't know about other basenjis but Izzy loves kids, but not a lot of adults.

    @jordandwilly - Thanks for clearing that up.... 9-5 is just fine, IMO.... I work and have always had to leave mine when I was at work, never an issue. That said, we were able to set up the house that access to the backyard (with 10 to 12' privacy fences) with a doggy door and a dog room in the house for them, Locks on the gates so there is NO access for anyone. Dogs sleep 90% of the day so being at work doesn't bother them... never have mine even when I had a litter in the house (And have been in the breed as owner/breeder for 35+ years). You can hire a dog walker to take them out mid day..which is a good solution. and give them a mid day meal depending on their age. I do not and never have used free feeding, period. Especially if you have more that one... you never know what/who is eating what. And you can set up camera's on line to watch them from "afar".... LOL. Keep in mind people that many of us need to work and have day jobs. The most important thing is the time you need to spend with them when you are home. Example would be, if you have young children and you work... when you get home you are going to spend your time with your human children... NO dog would be happy if left out... they need their time also because they are a family member and need as much time as a human child. Again in my opinion

    Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

    @ktiefen1 You would be correct!! Potty Training eventually came easy because ours is so treat motivated....lol. Basic obedience is a challenge for us......ahe is definitely her own girl....and please dont disturb her sleep. You could lose a limb. ::)))))

    @Mr: I guess B's aren't the only ones. I just love the captions on these photos! So clever! I have to over see any toys I have with Uzie and Candi my hound mix (to whom Uzie is really bonded) She starts the destuffing, and he gladly finishes it. Kongs and the like are the only thing I can leave in the toy box. The first week I had him, he swallowed the tail end of an unstuffed toy. Biggest hair ball I ever saw! then I had to bring him for a barium study as he just was not right….I have been paranoid ever since! But, he only tears and does not swallow now, I think he was so excited to be out of a crate and just started the mouthy puppy stage "lets see what this world is made of" at age 18mos. I can't help but laugh when he wants to remind me of dinner time and he picks up the end of a doggy bed and looks at me to see if I am aware of him...

    Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol
