Just an FYI, I actually started this thread just B4 I was off work for a week (Sorry). I'm back now but haven't seen the truck again….yet.:) Still planning to leave a note. I'll see it again soon, I'm sure.
Thanks everybody! She seems much calmer now…at least for the moment. She basically had given herself a rug burn in a rather delicate part of her body so she is a little uncomfortable right now. :o The steroid has seemed to help though. I think she has found her happy place in the corner of my bedroom and she has been sleeping there all evening...which is a strange place for her in general. It's apparently much better than her other almost choices...the staircase and beside the Norfolk Pine (I love that picture).

I know that picture of Bing well - it hangs in pride of place in the hall. I can only guess how you came by it as I would think his breeder would have been the only person we gave a copy to!
Thanks for the info re Fanconi. We will obviously keep that very much in mind.
Although I sometimes treat Medjai as a kid person, I find that type of stuff ridiculous. Dogs have a much better purpose than to replicate babies. Medjai's main purpose in my house it to keep me company, and chase the birds out of the back yard when he feels like he didn't get enough running out at the dog park, or walks around the neighborhood.
Also, Walmart has $4 fleece throw blankets that you can use on your furniture for her to lay on as a compromise to britches. If you are really lucky you may be able to find them at Big Lots for as low as $2.50
I'd second what lvoss says about fleece - my pup is in heat as well although we're 10 days further in (Liyah started on the 8th) than you are :D. I found a bolt of fleece in Walmart's remnants section this week - cut 3 throws from it - actually thicker than the pre-made throws. The bolt cost 2.84 - quite a deal!
I too had to identify myself as the person that is intended for the dog and sign for it..no mistakes here, and I am glad that theyy make you do that, even if it is little reassurance, it is better than a free for all luggage area.
Oh, I wish there were pictures involved, sounds like they had so much fun.
Otis loves playing with the sheets if I am changing them, but I have never thought of pulling him..might have to give that a try.
I only have one boy of unknown parentage as he is an adoption but my guess is that they probably do "know" family by scent if not sight. Their differing reactions to "family" probably relates back to the "pack" mentality. A female may have two daughters that she treats completely differently due to her perception of their ability to challenge her as "alpha" female in the future. I would guess it is similar for males. Time together as a "family", as with humans, is probably also a factor. Just my thoughts.
Mmmmmm…the smell of singeing dog fur - I know it well! 😃 Mine sit so close to the small fan heater in my bedroom, it makes their whiskers go curly!
The basenji my brother had when I was in high school would sleep UNDER our Franklin woodstove in the basement - Franklin stoves have higher legs than regular woodstoves. When Zeke would come out for water, you couldn't touch him as his fur would burn your hand.
We have one of those toys, but it is chicken, not a fish, one of their faovites, no stuffing left in large parts of its body, but it still works like a charm..they love it.
I am glad Buddy is back to jis normal spunky self after his ordeal that other week..
He is looking good..:D
since the Hips/Eyes/Fanconi is all good/normal/clear (still waiting for thyroid), we actually went ahead and selected the male, absolutely stunning Ch. Bushbabies Red Ryder, from Bushbabies Basenjis in Livermore, CA. Waiting for Lana to come in heat! They are a very good match, body and personality, should be pretty nice puppies!
The owls are very pretty and I also like the white one. We have a hawk after my birds outside that I would love to stuff never happen but I yell at him all the time.
I too can't imagine why on earth anyone would crop a Basenji's tail! Perhaps the tail was damaged?
I do know that the Liberian black and whites which have now been crossed with Central African Basenjis, occasionally had their tails cut by native Liberians to avoid monkeys grabbing them by their longer tails. This was some years ago and I don't know whether they are still kept for hunting in that country.
Perhaps someone who knows modern day Liberia could say?
That would make the only sense. I've seen videos of monkeys swinging down from trees and grabbing a tigers tail repeatedly. Also grabbing their ears. The monkeys were lucky as the tigers came really close to grabbing them for lunch. 😃
People just don't care. They don't think other people's pets can get sick from what they toss. Wait til it's their pet or worse, child, and watch the hue and outcry over it. Like I said, I keep Imodium tablets with me. Most times a half tablet will stop AJ's runs. I looked it up on the 'net and it is safe to give dogs.
It's amazing how fast things can go down their throats, isn't it?
AJ and I were in Bradenton, Florida spending the night one time waiting for a load. I took him for a nice long walk and on our way back to the truck, there was a Cuban family (Mom, Dad and about 4-year-old boy) who were watching AJ.
AJ just loves children, so I asked if it would be okay for him to say "HI" to the little boy. The mom told me he was terrified of dogs because apparently when he was tiny, he was bitten. We were standing about 15 feet apart and I was keeping AJ on a tight lead right next to my leg. The little boy was peeking out from behind his mommy's leg, just staring at AJ with those huge black eyes.
As his mom and I were talking, he edged out slowly from behind her leg…slowly....slowly...
AJ just sat down and waited for him. Eventually, the little boy worked up the courage and approached AJ on his own. After a few minutes, he was petting AJ and getting licks and loves from my dog. His mom was so astounded all she could do was stand there and stare.
His dad said something in Spanish to his wife, then Mom translated, "We never thought he'd ever be next to a dog. He's always been so afraid of them. This is good!"
I know it's bad, but I share flour tortillas. I eat them randomly and will toss Medjai a little piece of one. He likes to play with it more than eat it, but he also like to eat it.
