Adoption books ?

Basenji Rescue
  • Mom and Dad are thinking it could be time to adopt a new Basenji friend. (YAY) we are hoping there might be matches at Medfly but we'll see. In the meantime, does anyone know any good literature about Dog adoption? My parents have only ever had puppies and I thought some backround reading could be useful, however Amazon is littered with books and nothing really stands out.. Any suggestions ?

  • I haven't read it, but many love

  • There is one titled "The secondhand Basenji Handbook". It's not comprehensive by any means, but a nice introduction to a rescue B.

  • Thanks =) I think a mini collection will be needed, so I'm still looking for a "biggie". I'm so surprised how much harder it is to find a solid rescue guide!

  • Karen at Medfly stays in contact with people who adopt from Medfly and gives guidance after they take their Basenji home. She's just like a breeder and you sign a contract. If it doesn't work the Basenji goes back to her. You can call her anytime after you adopt as she has a lot of experience with all kinds of Basenjis from the very difficult to the easy ones.

We are lucky enough to have several of the pack in our Sunday group. Last Sunday Butler (Batboy) and Kizzie were there, we also see Kongo (Afrika) and Flash on occasion. Kizzie (5 months old when captured) was always so shy, even at the park she hung back and her folks sometimes had difficulty catching her to leave, but Sunday she was right in the group, ran in a big 23-basenji run, and came right to her 'mom' easily, what a change. It was a thrill to see her playing with the other basenjis and being so close to the humans, coming to her folks to be petted. Wow, what a lucky basenji! Butler (Batboy) was only 8 days old when captured, so he has grown up with humans and is not at all shy, comes right up to get petted and is really bonded with his human and basenji brother (an older "Holland" dog, they look very much alike). It's great that all the adopters have a group to share successes and challenges.

@AC~Akeyla: Well, we recieved an email from the coordinator of the B we want to adopt. She is ready to set up a home visit… I figure that's better than not hearing back from them. Huh? Also, what are they looking at when they come for a home visit? I'm happy to hear the good news. You have a good coordinator. My application and request to adopt fell through the cracks, so I'm happy to hear people in your area are efficient and on the ball. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Thank you MacPac. I contacted 2 breeders in the Gainesville-Ocala area but they don't have any available at the moment. We'll keep looking. Thank you everyone for the great suggestions :)
