Looking for good breeder to get a brindle pup

Hi everyone, it has been a long time since I have been on the boards. Keith and I have been enjoying Faro to the exclusion of all else I am afraid. We are currently looking for our second Basenji. Hopefully our new baby would would be a dark brindle girl. Faro turned one today and we are looking for a playmate for him.
We go just one as we were unsure how we would do as Basenji parents but have found we are crazy about it.
My question is just which breeders do y'all know that are having nice striped babies this year.
I have of course looked at BCOA breeder directory and been in touch with a few people. But as we all I know the BCOA doesn't endorse anyone and I would like to be more careful about testing and health issues. It seems like we made a lucky escape and didn't buy from a puppy miller last year, but we almost did. Thanks goodness for the internet and research. Anyway good advice is appreciated. I don't mind traveling to get her either. Thanks in advance.

Regardless of who you choose as a Breeder, you should always do the reseach yourself by verifying testing on OFA.
Have you tried Tad Brooks? Meisterhaus Basenjis in KY. Don't know for sure what he is breeding or has bred this year, but if he doesn't have anything, he might be able to refer you to someone that does…. It is kind of late as many breeders already have reservations for all their "expected" pups.

I also recommend Tad. He does not have any brindles expected this year but may know of some. A lot of matings did not take this year and there may not be any pups available at this late a date as most reservations are done months in advance. We are still waiting to see if Tads girl has a girl so we can get a pup this year, all her litter will be red and white.

I have a pedigree, brindle boy Basenji, and am looking to breed. He is a beautiful pup, 2 years old ( not sure if he is even old enough to breed yet). He is also a calm tempered basenji, and loves to play fetch! Any advice on how to get the process started would be greatly appreciated!! Also, we live in Northern California.

I gently suggest if you have to ask you need to neuter him now. Having a pedigree doesn't begin to make your dog worthy of breeding. If the breeder was responsible, they would have educated you to begin with, had the dog on a neuter contract or with specifications that the dog be shown to title, health tested etc. You can post your dog's registration name and number so people here can evaluate the pedigree… but honestly, most dogs of any breed should never ever be bred.
I suggest you contact Basenji rescue and work with them so you get an idea of the number of dogs needing homes. It will help you understand that no matter how much you may want to breed your dog, breeding pet quality dogs is utterly irresponsible. Leave it to people who have spent years learning, researching pedigrees, genetics, and health and worked to buy dogs worthy of being bred. If your heart is with breeding, neuter your dog, find a mentor, go to shows, start reading genetics, study bloodlines, and learn and do it the right way. But if you just want to breed your dog because you love him... neuter him and work in rescue til the desire passes.

Have you talked with his breeder? Usually that is a good place to start as most times this is something discussed and usually your (his) breeder will become your mentor in the breed. What is his pedigree? Has there been health testing on his Sire and Dam? On other relatives in the pedigree?
Are there titled Performance and/or Show Basenjis up close in the pedigree? Have you shown him or done any performance events with him? Has he been seen by other breeders? Any comments from other breeders about him and/or his pedigree?
Have you done any health testing yet? Fanconi DNA? Eye Certification with a board certified Ophth Vet? Thyroid testing? After the age of 2 you can get Hip and Elbow testing done.

I could call his breeder- he is all the way in Fla. and we are in California. I was hoping to find someone closer to get help from. It sounds like I should first start with getting some testing done. I was just looking for some pointers. My sister in Hawaii breeds her dogs, and she really loves it. At least I have a starting point. Thanks!

I got my first two basenjis from GA and I live in CA. Their breeder has been very involved since the beginning giving advice and support and helping connect me with local contacts when needed. Is your boy's breeder a BCOA member? Are they active in the basenji community? If so, they should be able to help connect you to basenji club members in your area who can help you get started with activities like conformation or performance events and assessing your boy.
You will also need to get in touch with your boy's breeder and find out detailed information about the dogs in his pedigree. You will need to know what health testing has been done on them, are they alive, do they have any health issues, if deceased what was the cause and what was their age at death. These questions should be answered for at least 3 generations and better yet for 5 generations.

I will find out the name of the Kennel and let you know. It sounds like I need to go through all the paperwork I got with Mojo- I can find out more about his bloodline. Mojo is an amazing Basenji- beautiful, not many behavior issues, great temperment- he seems like a wonderful dog to breed. The whole process sounds quite complicated, and I still have much research to do. Thank you all for pointing out issues I need to research and how I might be able to get this process started. My daughter has shown him in a couple of very small shows through her 4-H club, and he did well- 2nd place for his first show! Do any of you do lure coursing with your Basenji? Just something else I believe he would enjoy- he already flushes out ducks from the neighborhood bushes.

Most of us here from Northern Ca lure course and do Straight Line and Oval track racing. And our local Basenji Club (Basenji Club of Northern California, www.norcalbasenjis.org) is active in putting on trials a few times a year. You can check the lure schedules at www.asfa.org or www.akc.org

Thanks for the links! I also found a club close to me- in Oakley, Ca. that does lure coursing, but it's mostly a greyhound club. I will look into the links you sent Thanks again!

Most clubs hold All Breed trials so at the actual events there will be likely be basenji people even if it is another breed club holding the event.
There are usually trials hosted by the Irish Wolfhound Club of Northern California in Oakley in February. I don't think the ASFA calendar is up to date yet so I am not sure if they will be thre are again this year or not.

If you can to share your boys pedigree, there are a number of breeders here that might be familar that pedigree and give you information.
Also, if you have the pedigree, you can check out health testing at www.offa.org using the dogs name and/or AKC registration number
