Vet needed Toronto

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi,

I'm purchasing a Basenji this upcoming weekend. I'm currently looking for a vet in Toronto that has experience with the breed. Does anyone know of any good vets in the Toronto area?

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Who are you getting your Basenji from, many of us are related by our Basenjis pedigree

  • Check with the breeder.
They can most likely give you the name of a vet in your area.

  • My Breeder has been very very helpful but the vets that she is familiar with are 1-2 hours from Toronto. I was hoping to find one in Toronto that may be familiar with Basenjis or willing to work with and learn about them.

  • He's getting my Frankie, Pat. While I know outside the TO area, I don't know of anyone directly inside TO. We will just have to start interviewing the vets in his area. Matthew can interview them first and I can always do a phone interview. We are racing this weekend, so there may be someone there that may know of someone closer. It was just worth a shot in case someone on the forum lived closer to Matthew.

  • @mattymo hi, did you happen to find a vet near Toronto that has basenji experience?

I would not have posted if I beleived it to be a scam. For folks who do worry about such things - one can always let the person know they would be more than willing to donate directly to the vet clinic for care of their pet. M.C. I too beleive they either got what they needed to help their little girl or they realized they put too much info on craigslist. I am hoping for the former. As for Drew - yes - that is a picture of him. If you really want to know - email me privately and I can send you a copy of an article I was asked to write for an Aussie pubication re: him.

@Benkura: His brother is my other boy 'Cahnce' who is Clear. It's just Chance & Trouper are chalk and cheese and both have good to offer the breed. I did wonder whether neutering him would be beneficial or not. Wasn't sure if it might induce too much stress. However, I would have to stop showing him if I did that and he already has 1 CC. I would not worry about doing it now… only something to consider "IF" he starts showing symptoms.... When Jaadii came down with Fanconi it was before the DNA test was available, so no one knew until he started spilling sugar. He was fine 11 months out of the year, but during Basenji breeding season he was a mess... and that was a lot of stress on him... So being neutered was not stressful, it was NOT being neutered that was. That said, not all dogs are alike... each are different... just putting in what we found with Jaadii....

BDawg…thanks...the next real vet appointment will tell me which member on the forum was right. :D:D:D I'm going with the thought that it was a one off because of the euthanasia (hey, I'm an optimist :D). In the meantime, I'll just do a couple of social visits. BTW, mine don't react to going in the driveway or door of the vet...so I think I'm lucky there. The only shots they've ever had have been regular vaccines.

Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.

Your dog suffered a similar injury, although not from ppoping, but that agrivated it. We had him on similar meds and it has been about a month now and he seems fine. No damage to his spine. Hope all goes well with your little Jet!
