The Essence of a Basenji Owner

Basenji Talk
  • Had to chuckle when I received the following message on Facebook from one of our previous puppy buyers:

Can you send us an e-mail? Raider ate our purchase agreement so I no longer have your e-mail address. We do want another puppy this winter, Raider is the best Basenji!

Only a B owner would think that it was just fine for the "best Basenji" to have eaten the purchase agreement. And this is from the people who called us not long after they got him to say that Raider had found a hole in the side of their family room couch, which he made into his own Habitrail by eating all the way through and out the other side. They thought he was so clever!

Sounds like they were prepared for a Basenji! :D

  • Love this story :)

  • Yes, they are "naturals" for basenji ownership. Admiration of your basenji's cleverness is a wonderful point of view!

@EMurata said in Advice for potential basenji owner: The "weather permitting" part of your statement wont work with a Basenji. My dog doesnt care if its 100 degrees out or 10, she needs constant exercise. If outside exercise isn't available for whatever reason, mental exercise is a good substitute. Basenjis are very clever and if you keep their minds busy it often serves to minimize or avoid destructive behaviour. You are not going to wear a fit Basenji out by walking him or her a couple of hours a day, but I have seen them perfectly content to kick back and relax after half an hour of demanding mental exercise! Clicker training can be useful here.....

@Cafu LOL on cutting leash.. I am certain they have retractable scissors in their gums. I have had mine cut leashes and cut straps to clothing that were so smooth, nothing else but scissors explains it (okay or razor blades). Which is why I put these on the collars... snap/ o ring, chain, o ring, leash [image: 1508253202524-leash.jpg]

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

Our boys don't touch human food at home, when I put my dinner at the couch next to Buana or chaufuko they won't look up… :D Also when we aren't in the room they won't steal food from the table (thank god because they should be really fat already thanks to the cats and Ryan) When it's on the floor, they will steal it :D
