Eastern Ontario/Ottawa Valley Basenji Owners

  • I'd forgotten how hard it is to entrust my semi-special needs boys to an unknown commodity but have recently moved & must attend a destination wedding.

I have 3 rescues: a 'normal' female, a male who's terrified of strangers and an extreme flight risk, plus a visually impaired youngster. The female & timid male do best sharing a kennel in non-free range facility with experienced staff and excellent security. The puppy wouldwould be happier in home setting with lots of humans, including older kids…he'd knock down or scratch a young child, plus he's a door Bolter.

If anyone knows a warm, experienced super-secure boarding kennel, or if you'd be interested in baby-sitting the youngster in exchange for similar care for your B, let me know!

So I've not given up on this. I went back to rainshinefoundation.org.au and researched it a bit. It looks legitimate to me, and I'm really skeptical. This isn't an endorsement. They claim they are funneling the majority of donations back to the people they are providing assistance to. I could get behind this. Is a Basenji Hunting Bell worth $300 USD? In my best Texas accent, "Hell Yeah!" If they really are sinking the percentage of money they receive back into direct support as they claim on their website... it's hard NOT to get behind that. I'm still trying to verify that. Feel free to chime in. Coconut is too big. Western Buckeye is too thin. If the above is legit... I don't want to compete. I don't want to make something that mimics those from Africa. If it's legit... I'd rather support the cause and spend the $300 USD. So mine have to look different. They have to resonate sound. Which wood? CNC engraving? Laser engraving? Slots? Collar? Clasp? How do I support Basenjis? Tooling is going to cost a bit. I think I have have the bell figured out. I may also have the clappers figured out too, but I need to test all of this. The part that concerns me is the collar. Weaving, macramé, braiding, sewing... Anyway... these are thoughts in motion...

I like this one a lot, it's hilarious! Being a BRAT member, I would have to rephrase the last one about pregnancy, though… (I know, I'm taking it too serious... sorry). :DI am definitely going to make a copy of it for my fridge!:D

Hi yul, Welcome to Basenji Forums! There is no dog breed that is truly non-allergenic (not allergy causing) because all dogs produce dander (shed skin cells), saliva, and urine. You can be allergic to the dog dander, dog saliva, or both. Urine is less of a problem since dogs usually potty outside. Pet hair itself is not an allergen, but it can collect dander, dust, and pollen. To answer the question about shedding, Basenjis do shed, but its not as much as some other breeds and they keep themselves very clean with their own grooming methods. Their coats are so short, though, with you'll hardly notice if they shed. Basenjis are known to supposedly produce less dander than other breeds, and many people who are mildly allergic to dogs can tolerate some of these "low dander" dog breeds with proper environmental controls. Be careful though, as there are no guarantees. People's pet allergies vary greatly. Severe pet allergy sufferers may not tolerate any dogs at all, even with the best environmental controls.
