Yaaaaaaay, I got my Basenji Prefix…

Breeder Talk
  • In the US it is 30 on the registation form, however recently changed is that if you "pay" extra you can have one up to (I think) 36 letters/spaces.

  • Patty, I do have to confess to making a widdle bit of a fib :o… Its actually 30and I dont think I said, it also includes our prefix, AND the spaces as well. So its not actually the letters coming to a total of 30, but letters and spaces as well... Not sure if I have written that very well, so I hope you understand what Ive written :o...

  • Tanza, thats interesting about being able to 'pay' for extra letters… Would see hell freeze over before that happens down under :D... Took us years and years of hard work and slog to only just recently be allowd the 30... A further increase in the number will never happen in my lifetime, quite possibly not in my kids lifetime either :p...

To the OP, unless you do health testing, and then get a title on your dog, your best bet is to not breed. To do it right will cost you more than you could ever get in stud fees unless he is phenomenal. To Rosie.. wow. No. Contact BRAT and adopt a dog. The fair thing to your dog is to love her, spay her and not risk cancer, dying or complications from whelping and other issues. The responsible thing to your children isn't to become a backyard breeder creating puppies, but to show them you actually CARE about animals and not produce more. Unless of course you are willing to fork over the money required to do all the health testing (this is not your vet saying "she's fine" but rather hip xrays, Fanconi DNA, thyroid, heart etc!) AND pay for stud service to a dog who has also been tested (good luck with that– most reputable stud owners don't just breed to anyone).

Everyone pretty much already covered what I was going to say :) I spoke with Toni before I got my boy because I am from Maryland. I ended up going with a breeder in Florida because at the time, that's where I was living. If I were to get another basenji pup though, I would definitely go to Toni. She was so great at answering any/all of my questions & also was very forthcoming about information regarding her dogs & her home. She offered, more than once, for me to come see her dogs while I was back in Maryland for vacation last winter.

Thanks for the update, Andrea, haven't read anything on the B-list for a while, and I have always admired Vickie. Anne in Tampa

Ha, ha! It is a small world. Actually, Katie Campbell is the breeder :) But yes, I co-own the bitch with her. I will post more details later :)
