  • CALIFORNIA–Medical Exemption Bill AB 2000 ACTION ALERT!

California Assembly Member Curt Hagman has filed a bill which will insert a Medical Exemption Clause into California's Rabies Law. Assembly Bill AB200 http://www.leginfo.ca.gov./pub/09-10/bill/asm/ab_1951-2000/ab_2000_bill_20100217_introduced.html

"This bill would exempt from the vaccination requirement the owner of a dog that a licensed veterinarian determines, on an annual basis, may have a potentially lethal reaction to the vaccination."

The bill has gone to the Agriculture Committee, concerned pet owners should call the Committee Secretary (Mona Wood) at 916-319-2084 and leave a message for the Committee that you want them to recommend passage of this bill. Feline owners should request that this clause include cats as well.

West Virginia's new 3 year rabies law will be effective 90 days (June 13) from the bill's passage on March 8 http://www.legis.state.wv.us/Bill_Status/bills_text.cfm?billdoc=HB4407 SUB ENR.htm&yr=2010&sesstype=RS&i=4407 . WV PET OWNERS CONCERNED ABOUT THE REMOVAL OF A MEDICAL EXEMPTION IN THE ORIGINAL HB4407 SHOULD CONTACT DR. KINDER AT THE NUMBERS AND E-MAIL ADDRESS (below) TO LET HIM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS! Unfortunately, the legislature took the medical exemption clause out of the original bill filed by Del. Guthrie. The state's Public Health Veterinarian, Dr. Gary Kinder (304) 558-2214 Ext. 4640 Cell Phone: (304) 546-9560 or gkinder@ag.state.wv.us , e-mailed me that he and the Department of Agriculture would not oppose a bill changing the law to 3 years, but that they would oppose the inclusion of a medical exemption clause. The exemption clause filed in the original bill was removed. Rabies vaccines labeled instructions state that they are for healthy dogs and cats. There must be pets in West Virginia battling systemic cancers, hemolytic anemia, and other diseases for which rabies boosters could pose a life-threatening risk – Dr. Kinder should explain his position to West Virginia pet owners whose animals are or may be impacted by this amendment to the original bill.

Well, the problem with fly spray either for horses or humans for that matter would be that they can lick it off… and not only on themselves but each other... and we know how Basenjis can lick... I would be kind of leary of a spray....

@Tayda_Lenny: Hello! there is a possibility that Tayda, Lenny and I will be moving Northern California in the next few months! I noticed there are a lot of Northern Californians on the forum and I'm wondering where the really dog friendly area are. I might be working in San Jose, and would prefer to live about 1/2 hour north - maybe in Freemont/Union City/Newark area. Is this area dog friendly? Are there fenced in Dog Parks around? Hello there! I live in Cupertino and work in San Jose. Here are two websites that will tell you what dog parks, trails and even hotels you can take your B to. http://www.bahiker.com/doghikes.html http://www.wagntrain.com/dog_parks.htm
