Our dog has learned how to escape from her crate!

    I locked our girl in her crate in the morning the last two days and after I leave my wife says she is loose in the morning.

    We have the wire crates with the vertical latches. The spring broke on the latch. I witnessed how she does it. She slides the clasp up with her nose while pushing on the door. The latch is still not that easy to lift as its still a tight fit.

    Hah! Paco escaped from his crate yesterday as well - it was my fault, though. I had removed the divider in the crate and forgotten to check the latch on a second door on the side. I expected a LOT more mess from him - but all he did was pull some of our clothes out of the hamper, make a bed out of them on the floor, and apparently lie there with all his favorite chew toys. He even managed to hold his bladder until I got home and opened the door! :D

    How do you plan to fix it?

    We could but she really does not need to be crated, so right now we just think she is soooo cute. We need to crate our other dog due to aggression issues & I have been crating them at the same time as it makes him happier.

    She loves her crate and sleeps in it. Its her safe place.

    This her in her "happy place", just fed fast asleep.

    I can just put a new spring or a bungie cord on it, if it does become a problem.

    Our 2 b's CHEWED through their kennels and crawled out the hole in about an hour. All was ok until they figured out how to do it. So we got a 5x5x4 chain link kennel and put chicken wire on the top. It has a latch gate door and they got THAT open so we got a chain and a carbinar lock and they are as happy as can be. They wait at the door to go in.They get treats when they kennel. :) Well worth the money.

    My old bitch is totally averse to being crated on her own. As a young adult when I was trying to insist that she go in on her own (after trying every method) I cruelly put a padlock on her crate. I left her a little while in the living room and was amazed to hear her scratching on the door. When I went in I was I found the padlock still intact on the crate. She must have pushed down one end and clambered through the gap!!!

    I like wide martingale collars. They can't back out of them and the collar gives you more control without risking damage to the neck if they do pull. Look for Whippet or Greyhound collars. The one I used is three inches wide and tapers to the back. But bottom line, the reason dogs pull is that it is rewarding to them......they get closer to whatever is attracting them. So stopping until the leash is slack will work (if you have patience), changing direction every time the leash tightens will work, targetting will work. Many roads lead to Rome. You can experiment and find out what works best for you, but it isn't good to let the dog reinforce the habit, which is what makes it difficult to sort this problem out when you also need to give him exercise! One solution is to give him exercise with one harness or collar and practice your loose leash walking with another, until he "gets it". IMO, retractable leads teach the dog to pull. They are also dangerous. Ask a vet. They treat many "hit by car" injuries suffered by dogs that were on a retractable when the owner didn't react quickly enough. There is also the potential for injury when the dog wraps the leash around a person or another dog. And in many places they are illegal, i.e. the leash laws specify 6 foot maximum leash length.

    In your position, where you really have to take her out a lot, I understand. And I hope her comfort continues. My point was it is situational need, not dog need to be that social. :) I have a slim chance of that having worked with my current 2, but with my incredibly dog aggressive first one, I'd have been out in a basket muzzle and warning everyone to keep their dogs away.

    Well, the lab I mentioned (chocolate overweight one) almost took me out by slamming into my knee. I commented loudly " he better not insure my knee!" No comment from the owner. Others were keeping an eye on this over exhuberant dog too. Many peeps were standing behind a bench for protection. What really bugs me is that the park has very visible signs when you enter it that say you must have control of your dog.

    Jaycee digs same way but she does somersaults head down over she gos first time neighbor saw it they could not beleive it. I think neighbor came over every day for a week waiting to see it again and Jaycee would do it. Yes I very much second that digging usually will cause the great B-500. Rita Jean

    That's right I forgot about goose poop. Also flattened dead dried out birds. Mine also would eat dirt and tan bark. "What the hell was I missing in their diet" I'd ask myself. (-:

    Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.
