• Hi,

My name is Chealsie and I am new to the Basenji world. I have been doing research for about a year and a half now on the breed and am anxiously awaiting the day I can take home my puppy from our breeder- Eldorado Basenji. Its nice to know I have a place I can come and pick peoples brain on the breed.

    Hi everyone!

  • Welcome from another New Englander! Great choice in a breeder! I have 3 basenjis from Eldorado (can't say enough great things about the sisters as breeders and about their basenjis). I remember waiting to bring my pup home last winter - seemed like she would never get here! 😃

In the meantime, this is a great place for info and some good entertainment - welcome and be sure to post pics when your pup arrives…we love pics.

  • Hello and welcome to the forum:D
My bitch has Eldorado breeding in her on her sires side, good choice:D

  • Welcome to the forum Chealsie, when will you get your Pup?

  • I am waiting to see if one of their inseminations took or not so I wont find out until the first week in December, if it did take then I should be expecting my puppy the beginning of March. If it does not take then she has a litter now expected to go home in December.. It has been a long road- I knew once I visited them last year I wanted one of their puppies so for it to finally be happening is amazing..and a little scary- Basenji's aren't the easiest of breeds but I wouldn't have it any other way

  • So exciting!! Are you thinking of showing your pup?

  • Houston

Congratulations on your new puppy to be, it must be so exciting..We can't wait to hear about it once you know more and then of course also see pictures…

  • Welcome to the forum! We are so happy you're here! Best of luck with your pup, do let us know how it goes. And as you've already learned, you'll have a lot of extended basenji family here. Our girl Zip's dam is from Eldorado.

  • Thank you all,

I am not thinking of showing her but have been comtemplating agility- likely just for some good exercise and discipline, not for actual competition; I went into this just wanting a companion dog. However, I am not familiar with any facilities or places around where I might be able to go. As soon as I know when I am getting the puppy I'll be sure to post pictures and pick everyones brain on puppy training.

  • congrats on your new upcoming puppy.

If you're going to train for agility, go ahead and train for competition. You'll do better and that way if you change your mind, you don't have to re-train. Believe me. I started doing agility with Digital the brindlewonderkid 11.5 years ago with an idea of just to see if he liked it and where we could go with it. Digital is now retired with 30 titles to his name; most are agility titles and he's been ranked in the top 3 agility basenjis in the US for 7? years. I'm now on my 3rd agility basenji, Zest the superstar in training. You can see her here:

Clean Run is a great resource and has many good books/dvd's listed here:

    I like:
    Building Blocks for Performance
Really Reliable Recall (comes in booklet and dvd format)
and if i had a new puppy coming in right now, I'd get Sander's Pre-Sports Puppy dvd, but I haven't seen it.
I also like the Puppy Puzzle, but it's better for general puppy info, not so much on training/agility.
I'd also get Control Unleashed book and if you've trained dogs with more traditional methods, i just finished reading The Thinking Dog and really liked it. The Crate Games dvd is also very popular. Check your local library or amazon or dogwise.com to find the best price.

Visit classes, ask about puppy performance classes. I've had several older puppies (6 months or so) come through my Control Unleashed classes. So you may want to ask about that too.

Good luck and post pics when you know more!!

  • Welcome to the forum! Can't wait to see puppy pics 😃

  • Welcome to world of being a Basenji parent.

  • Welcome! I too am anxiously hoping the AI breeding took as we bred the sire! He has 4 confirmation champions from his first litter, so we're hoping for lovely babies. If you get one, it would be terrific to have an agility dog in the 'family.'

  • O wow Terry, what a small world! I kept asking Pam if she was going to breed a red to red litter this year as that is what I have been wanting and when I found out she was breeding Reba (my dream dog as I call her) I then started on her as to "who" she was breeding her to…he is a gorgeous dog. I will be ecstatic if it happens! If not, I dont know what I will do since I am sure her first litter will be gone by the time we will know and the other has three puppies already reserved for show homes....I get a little anxious but I have been waiting for over a year now and I am ready to be a Basenji parent.. lets keep our fingers crossed!!!

Trust me, the waiting gets worse after the puppies are born. 😃 Those few months are torture! Welcome to the forum and hopefully to basenjis very soon!

  • Yep, when it comes to Basenjis, it pretty much is a small world. Humvee, aka Tex Son, (he got his call name because he was the biggest puppy in his litter) has had a great show career, and you couldn't ask for a sweeter temperament - although the whole litter was was fabulous. His mom was a total love, and his dad is still incredibly handsome and devil-may-care at almost 11 years old. Hum loves to play with puppies and hang out in the house with his human mom. So although I haven't met Reba, I'm sure he will pass on his love bug genes!
We will be hoping the news is good and you soon have a noisy, lovable troublemaker in your life.
