Basenji sitting on other dogs' heads

Basenji Talk
  • Do your Basenjis sit on your other dogs?
It's been established that my Bailey is a little pill, but she does the strangest thing when she is annoyed with one of the other dogs, she'll sit down on top of the other dog's head. She calmly looks around the room and at me - then gets that "Oopsy, am I sitting on YOUR head?" look. She is a very strong female, and I swear if she could laugh out loud, she would be when she does this.

  • That's hysterical!!! I want to see pics!!! :)

  • LOL! Cody used to do that to Remi! Granted, Remi is 100% Meanness poured into a cute puppy package, so usually Cody did this after he was tired of Remi's antics.

Remi would be taking a two minute rest break from attacking/pouncing/playing with Cody. Usually he would rest on the cushion by the window. Cody would just calmly walk over to the window, circle around by Remi, sit right on his head, and look at me with his forehead wrinkled so as to say, "Mama, you know you'd have done the same thing if he was going after your dangley-bits, if you had them."

  • Otis does that sometimes, and he always does it to the dachshund, the dog that can't stand him, so funny..

  • :D:D:D Would love to see pics

Wow Megan. I just looked @ my Basenji book again and it is INCORRECT. I did some research online and there ARE other breeds who have disconnected paw pads like a wolf. Thanx for the lesson!

My mix is just a little shorter, and there's a similar thread going on here right now. As I say in that one, only DNA can tell you. https://basenjiforums.com/topic/14838/i-know-you-are-tired-of-being-asked/5 -Joanne

Well I had my first Consultation last night with one of the dog sitters. I really liked her. She works part time as a vet tech and part time as a dog sitter. I liked that she has a vet tech degree, and is comfortable with canine first aid/CPR. I would hope that all dog sitters are trained in this, but now I know to ask about it in the future. She walked in and was so surprised to see a Basenji in Oregon (She is originaly from Florida). We had a great hour long consultation. I reallt think she may be the one I go with, but as this is my first time needing a pet sitter I will go through the other two consultations before making up my mind.

My parents have a mutt mix with bernese mountain dog. Every time I go to their house and let Medjai out in the back yard, he growls and snaps at him. Medjai quickly warms up and I would simply recommend that you get the dogs outside, on leash in the front yard to meet the B. It's part of the neutral ground thing. Medjai simply tries to take control right away.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

In my personal opinion, basenjis don't get along with most dogs generally unless they are brought up to do so. They are a small package with a big attitude. My dog liked some dogs, others she would have outright wars with, especially if it had anything to do with her territory. My girl had a peeing competition with the scottie terrier across the way from us, every time we let her out, the first thing on her agenda was race off and to reclassify her boundaries! And when the scottie was let out she did the same.
