Play biting

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I've had a slight issue with Kananga trying to jump up and bite my leg when I'm leaving home. It's a harmless play bite, but I worry it could lead to behavior issues over time. He also does this when people are over at my home. They will be sitting on the couch, get up to use the restroom, and Kananga will try to "hunt them down" playfully. It's actually quite entertaining for me to watch, but again, I worry it's not appropriate behavior.

Any ideas what causes them to do this and what's the best method of correction?

I try to stop in my tracks and tell him to sit when he does this, although it works to stop him temporarily, I'm not confident it is a long-term solution.

He's actually been a good boy lately. No furniture chewing for quite some time and he's become very fond of his crate while I'm away. I find him hanging out in there on his own now. :D

  • Whoops, just realized I posted this in the Health sub-forum. My mistake.

  • Buddy does the same. Sometimes he'll just turn in the middle of crossing the street on a walk and do the jump up play biting. He stopped doing it for a while but has started up recently doing it on occasion. It's a puppy thing that is disappearing. He was really bad with doing that at the obedience classes while I was trying to get him to heal. When I walk around the house he'll come up behind me and bite my pants and put his foot around the front of my shoe to try and stop me.

@dedes9 - Sounds like it could be an issue with the patella. I would suggest a Vet visit to have them check that out. Here is a link you can read about it. While it is not a big issue with Basenjis it does show up... https://www.ofa.org/diseases/other-diseases/patellar-luxation

you can put some essential oils on him when you go out for a walk - there are some brands with special anti-tick-mosquito mixes available.

Could be a black fly bite. Mine get red welts on them if they get bit by them. Tucker has really bad reactions to mosquito bites, they puff up and blister so I have to really watch him and make sure I put his bug spray on him.

@cahootz I have made my own in the past.... there used to be pictured on the old Forum, I can't find them now. I got a stair tread (hard rubber) and cut it to fit from just behind the ears to the point of the chest. Wrapped it in a towel, duck tape it all up. Wrap around the neck and secure with Vet Wrap. Worked great, also I would put Tea Tree Oil around the stitches (not on).....

Mine have always recovered really quick I flush the bite wound if it´s a deeper one with saline or klorhexidine using a syringe twice a day if necessary.Sometimes i´ve put on an aloevera ointment or a special scar preventing cream when scab has been formed.

@lmillermmms: we dont have any red ants in the area that we chain her up in. but there are some around my garden which is way in the back yard. but i do take her to this pond in my neighborhood where there are lots of bugs I would take her to the Vet… these will not go away by themselves
