Good God Do They Ever Stop

Basenji Talk
  • So it's 4 minutes to midnight and my basenji and the foster are going, going and did I mention going? The boxer has finally stopping and taken a break about an hour ago to sleep, but he is still getting bounced and pounced on. He looks at me with longing look of "will you make them stop" I tell him "no I'm sorry because if I let them get it out now, then they might let me sleep past 6:30"

And when did all of this doggy madness start? about 5pm when I got home from college after stopping at the store really quick (normally get home at about 4pm). I even had to delay their dinner by an hour and half because they where so crazy. They didn't even notice that the missed dinner at 7pm and that is something at clock work they don't miss. But they needed to first stop playing and then calm down/cool off before they could eat. It was no where near safe to walk when you have 2 basenjis and a boxer running the Triple-B 500 in the house

  • I can't believe it – must have been something in their breakfast :) -- after a full day at doggie day care, mine sleeps for a couple of hours when before goofing off again.

  • Did they drink kool-aid??
My daughter behaved like that once when she had had some kool-aid at her mothers-day-out, crazy, couldn't calm her down..
I'm just kidding, I can not believe that they are still going..that is late..

  • Hey Miya - Are you showing Tiggy now that you are back in the states? How does Reggie like being back here?

  • That was a long time playing and I hope you got to sleep until 6:30. I would had to say kennel I am tried.

Nope no kool-aid :D thank goodness. Not even sneaky basenjis stealing coffee they just had a wild hair up their butt I guess

I have done some fun matches but no real shows, I haven't had transfered his papers over yet from Germany. I kept putting it off and forget then I started college now that's taking my time up (and spare cash) up. But soon my finances will be back on track. And I will be able to get him back in the ring. I have also done so lure practice with him, he really like that. Another thing he really excels at is obedience, we did a few classes and he is a rock star at that too.

As for Reggie, well that boy he could careless as long as his momma is there . Well they both do miss going everywhere with us, like they could in Germany.

    PS it's "Maya"

  • The old adage - "A tired Basenji is a good Basenji" - comes to mind. :)

Last thing we do at night before turning in is either walk ours or take her to the park. Then she gets a chew to keep her busy while we're getting ready for bed, then everyone's under the covers (she burrows).

Even then, there are nights…especially if the cat is out and about being adventurous.

    You have my sympathy... :)

Just wanted to give an update on my experience and hope that it helps others in the future. So I did get the puppy and have had her now for about 6-7 weeks. She is doing AWESOME! Shes completely healthy, and at 14-15 weeks, is incredibly obedient. For instance, I take her to the dog park, and she recalls every time I say "Nani come." There are also some agility obstacles in the park which I'm starting to train her on and she does really well with simple things like walking up, down, sitting, staying, gonig through the tunnels, etc… When I give her her food, I make her sit, stay, and give me a fist bump before she can eat, and I'll switch the order up every time. I then say "now you can have it" and then she eats. Its to the point now, where she is in the kitchen, and I'll go to my room, come back in 2-3min, and she is still sitting by the food and hasn't even touched it yet until I give the command. She is doing fantastic! Fantastic with other dogs, fantastic with kids, adults, everything. She doesn't have a tendency anymore either now to chew on things she's not supposed to and when she does get the urge, she looks for her toys. Not sure if this is just because the breed itself is very intelligent, or the breeder, or a mix of both but I couldn't have asked for a better puppy, especially the way she is now at the age of 14-15 weeks. My allergies also do very well around her whcih is HUGE! Not sure if I just got lucky or what, but she is great a puppy for how obedient she is already, her compassion, and her behavior. Just simply amazing :-)

@Terry: Zoe is only 1/2 Basenji and does bark. But she also has a strange sound I'm not sure about. It's a strange yell. Is that a Basenji howl? It almost sounds human. Does it sound like a combination of car tires screeching to a halt, fingernails scraping down a chalkboard, and a woman being bludgeoned to death? If so, welcome to the infamous Basenji scream, hehe.
