Questions about a breeder in Louisiana

    We moved to Louisiana from Tennessee, I came across this add in one of local papers. Does anyone recognize this person? I lost Mo last year, and in the future, I will be looking for a friend, but I do NOT want to buy from a person that is not known to the community. I have found a few that have ties to other breeders in the community, but I am not sure about this person.

    Nope, this person does not ring a bell. And there are no Carols listed in Louisiana in the BCOA roster, nor anyone with that location. Most responsible breeders are members of the Basenji Club Of America.

    Finding the right breeder for you is the first important step in getting a great match for your home. Hopefully, your experience will be as wonderful as mine have been. My breeders are great, lovely dogs and I email or talk to them on a semi-regular basis. When I'm in town, I'm welcome to stay at their homes and my dogs LOVE to see them again. A good breeder will want updates - good and bad updates. Personally, I've never heard of the person you mentioned, but that doesn't mean much. However, I do not see that person listed here:

    Which is a great place to start looking. Another place to meet/see basenjis and their people is at a dogshow.

    I also have never heard of the person you have listed. And as already noted they are not a member of BCOA and most responsible breeders are….

    Regardless of who you go to, you need to first verify health testing. You need to know the registered name and number of the sire and dam and then you can check it out on the OFA site for health testing.

    Agilebasenji has give great links and ideas for finding a responsible breeder.

    Thanks for all of the replies. I am going to find a breeder that is listed on one of these sites. I didn't think that this person was reputable since there was hardly any information listed on the puppies.

    We were saddened and disappointed in our visit there. It was our first exposure to the Breed unfortunately. We are working with Robyn and a reputable breeder in South Georgia currently. We are hopeful for a match with a young adult Or teen. Thanks for your input.

    I understand what you are talking about. I have actually talked to someone about leasing one of my dogs. But, it is with the intent of me sending him overseas for a few years then getting him back after he has been used for breeding an been able to have a wonderful show career over there. As Pat and Lisa said, this is not common in the US. Personally, I would want to know WHY they want two dogs. Training two Basenjis is NOT the same as training two Afghans or Beagles. I could see wanting to move to a less hairy breed, as she has uber amounts of hair in her place I am sure! You have to think… do your puppy to be the one that gets the short end of the stuck and you get it back and have to "fix" what wasn't done in raising that you would have done? There are so many what-ifs to ponder to decide if this is really the route you want to go. Also, you have to know that if she gets a male and a female, the likelihood of an accident is always there... so you would want to make sure if the other is a carrier, yours MUST be a clear, and vice versa. Better to be safe than sorry. You can email me off the boards if you want, I might be able to help you.

    Pam Geoffroy [Eldorado] is President of the BCOA and Debbi Hauri [Mata Hauri] is a longtime Basenji breeder. I am sure you would love a pup from either of them :-)

    @Lauma: Do you have any information on Itzyu Basenjis in VA? My mother and brother are adopting a "Golden Opportunity" dog from them next month. Can't go wrong with a Basenji from Itzyu Basenjis…. my opinion is go for it..... and they will get a great "golden opportunity" dog from them!

    Yes, Arlene, you do need at some point to take a stand and trust what you see and what you like… Breeding comes down to that in the end.... And with a bitch that is only 1 1/2 yrs looking down from the top is not a very good judge... IMO... reason?... They are not mature yet... and they shouldn't be.... their ribs have not even "sprung" at this age.. again IMO.... I would be hard pushed to say a dog is "wider" in the front then the rear at this age by just looking down on them.... again IMO.... Here is a link to 3 pictures of Kobey, 6wks, 3 months and 5 1/2 months... everything I saw on this pup at 6 wks that I liked (and that is a bit early then the 8 wks usually used for evaluating pups) I still see... but there are differences while growing... Now granted this pup is one of the few that has yet to really fall apart with a growing spurt... And also the faults that I saw at 6wks are still there too..... www.tanzabasenjis.net/kobeygrowing.html
